It's easy to see why reviewers score games a particular way. It has nothing to do with the games themselves being bad or good, but it's all about reviewers trying to stay on the community's good side. Case in point, FFXIII and XIII-2.

Reviewers gave XIII high scores, but the fans bashed the game for being to linear and uninteresting. As soon as XIII-2 came out, reviews for that game were less than stellar, and they typically matched the community's viewpoint of XIII even though XIII-2 was less restrictive than XIII and had better gameplay.

Reviewers are either paid to give games high scores, or they write their reviews as to avoid pissing off the community. When they do go out of their way to piss off fans, it's simply for attention (see Jimquisition.)
