An angelic alien invaded earth which was home to a civilization of people called the ancient who were a part of the life force which is a mystic primordial goo that gives folks magic powers so this alien was somehow staved off and put into captivity by the ancients after destroying everything and then some time went forward and the the planet repopulated and became modernized and this mad scientist decided to clone this angelic alien who was somehow kept in captivity in a cryostasis state for thousands of years was cloned by an evil japanese scientist into a super soildier named Sephiroth who was also part human because angelic parasite and then this guy zack happened alongside cloud and then sephiroth becomes evil after realizing he was part celestial parasite part angel part homosexual and then he decides to summon more jenovas or whatever it is to earth by crashing a giant meteor to kill every one and then cloud who pretends hes zack who pretends hes a woman in drag at one point decides to get a gang by some random series of events and then they fight sephiroth and kill him and he comes back 3 years later as a K pop revival of O town.

The only confusing part is whether Jenova or Sephiroth is in control, but Square later "clarified" it and said that Sephiroth was taking the reigns (which I personally think is way less interesting).

I think the justification for having monsters in VII is that they pop out of the mako reactors, right? Or at least are a byproduct of them. So somehow some mako got smeared all over that house and it came alive.

>Zack, an elite ShinRa in a faction known as SOLDIER investigates a malfunctioning MAKO reactor with Sephiroth, also a SOLDIER, and Cloud, a nobody grunt
>the reactor is in Cloud's hometown that he'd left saying he would join SOLDIER before failing, so he hides his identity in embarrassment while there
>Sephiroth discovers monsters are being created in the MAKO reactor and later discovers ShinRa documents about his own origins
>Sephiroth realizes he's a genetic freak that ShinRa has been using to kill its enemies, while his mother, presumably the last remaining Cetra is a guinea pig, and his entire people are extinct
>Sephiroth goes into a rage, killing everyone in the town and going to the reactor where Jenova is stored, taking her head
>Zack attempts to stop Sephiroth and gets jobbed
>Cloud then intervenes, stabs Sephiroth, gets severely injured in the process himself, and throws Sephiroth into the reactor
>Sephiroth doesn't die, but discovers the truth about himself in the Lifestream with Jenova's head

>Cloud, still half crazed with MAKO poisoning crawls to Zack and claims the Buster Sword from him. The trauma of Sephiroth's attack, the ShinRa experimentation, MAKO poisoning, and loss of his friend fucks with his head, creating false memories where he believes that Zack was really him
>Cloud's underlying memories will occasionally challenge this worldview as the game progresses
