Is it some kind of autistic meme deep into the Sonic fandom or is it actually something in one of the games? Because I played most of them, and Sonic can only go Super.

if you play "Sonic 3 & Knuckles", get the 7 EMERODS, go to Mushroom Hill Zone then get into the special bonus ring you'll be transported to the hidden palace zone, and lose the 7 emeralds, after that every bonus ring you come across will get you there and you can get into a special blue spheres bonus stage that will unlock each emerald into a super chaos emerald

once you unlock all 7 into super chaos emeralds, you can go hyper Sonic, or hyper Tails (super Tails doesn't even exist, sadly), or hyper Knuckles

and to make the story even more "that kid":

and they're all invincible and faster than normal forms, and require 50 rings to activate, which then starts a timer that runs on rings, just like regular Super Sonic (and Super Knuckles)

also Knuckles jumps lower than Sonic and Tails, if you never noticed, which makes some areas inaccessible to him unless you use some sort of glitch or simmilar, and makes some bosses harder because you can't ignore some mechanics Sonic/Tails can

also, some bosses' patterns are different for Knuckles, and some bosses are straight out completely different for Knuckles, I'd argue that Knuckles is sort of a "hard mode"

Technically, it isn't Hyper Tails. The text just reads Super Tails when you finally get him.

Hyper Sonic is the SSJ2 of the already almighty Super Sonic. It was so OP it was only in one game. His rainbow flashing colors as Hyper Sonic is why the form never returned.

Actually, You got the Tails part backwards.
There isn't a Hyper Tails, but he can only go Super. It's just that for whatever reason he needed the fucking Super Emeralds to reach that state, although the Taxman Port of 1 he only needed the Chaos Emeralds.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles, when combined, has 2 sets of special stages, along with 2 sets of emeralds.

The first are hidden away in giant rings in different areas of the Sonic 3 part of the game (Angel Island to Launch Base). Completing the special stage you're sent to will give you a chaos emerald. Nabbing all 7 will make you able to turn into Super Sonic.

HOWEVER, in the Sonic & Knuckles portion of the game (Mushroom Hill to Death Egg), there are giant rainbow rings, which contain a much harder set of special stages. Manage to beat those, and you get the Super Emeralds. Unfortunately, you can only get a Super Emerald if you have the corresponding Chaos Emerald in the Sonic 3 half of the game.

Once you get all of the Super Emeralds, you become Hyper Sonic. He can run faster than before, jump higher than before, and has a double jump that KILLS EVERY ENEMY ON THE SCREEN.

So no, it's not an autistic meme.

Adventure was a soft reboot and got rid of them along with retconning the classic games in some fashion.

I do remember one of them being an absolute pain in the ass and requiring a weird jump over red spheres though.

They were only meant as bonus items, weird that it took this long to get an answer. That said, there's still other elements that got retconned like Knuckles and Tails' super forms.

I dunno, there's something significantly less cool looking with modern sonic, like he's been softened in some way.

He has been softened a lot since Sonic 06. Compare his Brawl model to his Smash 4 model; Spines are shorter again, his limbs aren't as lanky, colors are more vibrant. It's like he's regressing back into Classic Sonic, but they are hell bent to keep the modern details and traits

Lost World had some of the most baby bing bing wahoo aesthetics I've seen out of a Sonic game, it was kind of disgusting

He's a stronger version of Super Sonic from Sonic 3 and Knuckles. If you power up the Chaos Emeralds using the Master Emerald in the second half of the game, they become the Super Emeralds. If you get all of them, you can become Hyper Sonic.

I haven't played it in years but how do get back to Mushroom Hill with the 7 emeralds? Aren't there 2 big rings per stage and no way to go back?
