So I'm about half an hour into Earthbound, just walking around the town with these punks in it.

Is there a specific point in the game in which things pick up a bit and get really good? Not too wowed by the intro of it.

If you're still not enjoying it by the time you get to Twoson it might not be the game for you.

Earthbound is all about the atmosphere. I would say the game gets better past that part though.

Okay cool. I don't hate it right now or anything, it just feels sort of simple and not as charming as I expected. I'll press on though.

Should I really focus much on the actual rpg elements, or is it pretty simple as long as you're not an idiot? I'm a jrpg veteran, just wondering if there are any hidden mechanics or difficulty spikes later on.

It's a very basic rpg and the deepest it gets is killing enemies or healing before your meter reaches 0. It never gets impressively difficult but it's not too easy.

Mother 1 Magicant > Mother 2 Magicant
I miss it lads. I should give M1 another replay.

The only remotely difficult thing is the first sanctuary guardian if you're under leveled and maybe the part near the end when you don't have the rest of your party with you.

...

Few questions to some anons here.

>The title "Mother" do you feel referred more to Mother Earth, or the player's mother in game? Do you feel that it's a theme that's more apparent in either game, as in Mother 1 is more about Earth itself, or Mother 2/3 is more about the relationship/bond formed with one's mother?

>Fan games aside, if Mother 4 were to come out with a resurrected Itoi, what do you feel the main themes would be in regards to the game?

IMO I feel Mother Earth is more a theme in Mother 3 versus a relationship one has with their mother.

If a legitimate mother 4 came out with those conditions I think the main theme would be about how on a large scale level we are becoming more desensitized to violence, how violence is becoming a more prevalent thing, as well as how individuals are caring less, and less about other people.

Mother 1 and 2 are both about saving the earth while the protagonists mother is just a steak dispenser. Mother 3 is the only game where the mother plays a significant role.

I couldn't make a guess at what a real 4th game would be about if it ever got made but you'd probably still play as a kid with a striped shirt.

Do you feel the homesick mechanic in Earthbound was poorly designed? It always seemed weird to me that Paula, Jeff, or Poo never had to call their respective family, or equivalent.

I could see Jeff getting away with it because his father had been away for up to 10 years. But, even tony calls a few times throughout the game, showing that at least on his end that they had a good friendship. It's also interesting that the character that seemingly has the most Guts, is the only one who misses his mother so to speak.

Its an issue of all the characters being poorly fleshed out and there being almost no interaction between party members. This doesn't ruin the game but it certainly would have helped had the main cast been a bit more developed.

I feel like grinding killed the game for me. I played EarthBound and after a while you really get into the atmosphere and story, seeing new enemies is cool too but having to grind just monotonises it

Duncan's Factory is plain bullshit. You pretty much have to grind some when Lloyd and Ana join. That's it, and the former is alleviated with a map and the latter didn't bother me.

Dragon Quest style party chat would be so fucking good in Earthbound
I wonder if someone could patch something like that in? Maybe not the actual dialogue just yet, but some coding that would allow that to happen.

are you speeding through it or taking your time?

Earthbound's charm comes from the characters and the settings. The NPCs, and the spritework. The Story is simple. The Battles are simple.

if you're going in wanting gameplay first, you're gonna have a bad time

>ness constantly yelling OK OK OK OK OK OK PKFLASH

Why is jeff so good?

???
I don't understand
Did you misunderstand my post?

Because while every other character has magical PSI powers, this little shit is just good at blowing shit up, and fixing stuff. Yet he was still one of the chosen ones.

>tfw heavy bazooka is infinite use, has splash damage, never misses and it easily out-damages most weapons and psi attacks for the majority of the time you have it.

Further proof.

>Highest IQ stat,
>Transcends PSI abilities

>tfw two intelelgent for psychic powers

I believe that the title "Mother" refers to the importance motherhood plays in childhood. Earth Bound Zero's ending has an enraged Giygas ready to conquer Earth, but Ninten and the Eight Melodies bring back memories of Giygas's mother (Ninten's great-grandmother), and allow him to be soothed and withdraw his invasion. EarthBound has Ness face off against a corrupted Giygas, and only "muh power of friendship" can defeat him. It's the weakest ending of the three, but it still shows how Ness's party must fall back on their family and friends to defeat evil. In Mother 3, Hinawa's death causes a rift in Lucas' family, tragically separating Lucas and Claus, and leaving both of the children to be easily manipulated. Thankfully, Flint finds Lucas and raises him to be a good child, but he still feels lost without a mother (Chapter 6). Claus, on the other hand, becomes corrupted to a tragic end.

all right so where did the dragons in mother 3 come from?
Did the earth always have needles and shit in this series?

Anyone else feel that 2 kind of has the weakest story of the three?

Yeah but it gives a better sense of going on a grand adventure.

I'd say Mother 1 has a really well-written story, but the gameplay is just too dated and muddles down the experience, even with Easy Ring, the Annaiversary Patch, and other fixes. Mother 2's story has a lot of weakness and flat writing, but the gameplay is more enjoyable. Mother 3 finds the balance, and combines an amazing story and atomosphere with gameplay that's actually fast and interesting.

...

3 is too linear and has terrible pacing towards the end though.

What happened to Ninten after Mother 1?

He went home and became a family man.

he could have helped

When I first played this game as a kid it scared the shit out of me, and then EVE dying made me cry.

tfw you play

for Giygas comfort his bloody rage in search of his human mother (Ninten's grandpa's first wife?)

I feel it refers to the earth. I remember Itoi has said some inspirations were the John Lenon song of the same name and that he felt the game can act as a "mother" to other games.

I don't want a official Mother 4 at all. The series had a proper ending, let it rest. A new game by itoi would be great though.
They were just there, we just never knew of them in M1 or M2.
Yeah. M1 has the stuff about your grandparents and M3 has well, you know. Each game has it's strengths and weaknesses.
He didn't know Giygas came back.

>wanted to go to bed
>suddenly a mother thread
Guess I'm up now.

I've never cried during a game, but Mother 1 brought me closer than anything else.

youtube.com/watch?v=yQUN7QAnMp0

Haven't finished Earthbound, but Mother 1 dealt more with a literal mother I thought. Giygas came to Earth in search of the human woman that raised him as her own. Not realizing she was dead.

Which Earthbounder is your favorite?

What? Maria was still on the ship when George left.

>enemy encounters every few fucking steps
>they all reward a shit amount of exp
>look of the game is really barebones, even by NES standards
That 25th anniversary hack fixes everything wrong with it.

>original Mother
it has many flaws
but good taste man

posting bestboy

25th anniversary looks ugly as fuck though.

are you jap or did you just have cool parents or something?

wow fag

my man Teddy
easy fuckin peasy

youtube.com/watch?v=T-mj20Xmf4w
the entire OST is so cheesy but i love it

why are they singing in perfect english if the target audience was japanese

Because they used native english speaking singers?

yes but do little japanese kids understand any of it

Obviously no.

>tfw no mother 4

Not a fan of that album aside from the 8 melodies one they did, I do like this other one though.
youtube.com/watch?v=vK4UfPTC_Zo&list=PL345969DF3FD77AEE
The original is nice too.
youtube.com/watch?v=3Y36t1LOEdM

Because nips love English and every country that speaks it.

Why? Mother 3 was a great conclusion. Would rather it end on a high note then see it turn to what Fire Emblem is now.

What? A dating sim?

But I want more !

Mother 3 is the TLOU of Mother. Linear, filled eith intrusive cutscenes and story, dumbed down casualized gameplay, and le sade store meme

Make sure you talk to the NPCs, I love the dialogue in that game and that's what really got me hooked. The type of humor is unmatched.

Step it up, senpai

Play DQ I guess.
Funny since M3 has the most refined gameplay of three. All three are fantastic games fag.

wish i had bought this one

>All three are fantasic games
Patently false

Whatever, all I can say is I feel sorry for your lack of taste. If you just wanted a recycled mother 2 then that's your problem.

...

>Play DQ I guess
On it, but it's not the same

It pops up on ebay from time to time at a wide range of prices

I guess I'm the only one who liked Earthbound's gameplay

It's simple in a way that reminds one why and how turn-based can still be satisfying without a whole lot of fancy gimmicks and animations.
Limited inventory and PP recovery force you to be very strategic and efficient with your turns, items and PSI usage.
Learning enemy behaviors and attributes plays a key role. Dungeons become endurance tests of how well you can manage your resources.

The writing is really offbeat and funny.
Fighting hostile punks around town and raiding the arcade to find their leader is really unusual for an RPG.
The modern suburban setting is a really nice change of pace from generic high fantasy crap.

I would say Earthbound more than anything is a game of subverting your expectations.
A lot of moments just set up to fuck with you and it's hilarious.

Play DQ if you haven't, basically the same and served as the main inspiration gameplay wise for the series.

I might just check it out, user. thanks.
i have attempted to in the past but i'll give it another go some time.

>user I am willing to let you and only you live. Board the mothership with me.

What kind of deal was he offering? What was his end game?

It's literally not fun.
I played through all of it and really like the aesthetics of it and the world. but it is not a fun game to play. that's just it. Yeah the music is insanely good and will make you remember it as a fun game, but no, I'm sorry.

As a long time mother fan I started DQ since I heard they were similar and ended up loving them.
He just wanted to salvage what was left of his "family". I think it would have been cool if they actually gave a "yes/no" prompt when he asks.

>Get to the factory
>Just wander around endlessly because everything looks the fucking same

Literally the worst place in the entire series.
