I'm not even sure where to begin learning the mechanics of this game to be honest. The inabiltiy to experiment with builds slows down the learning process so much, that new players end up having to resort to 99% theory and 1% practical application. Or basically just follow someone else's guide as the most efficient path, pretty fucking lame.

You start by following other people while learning why they do things the way they do. Before long you'll understand how stuff works and can make your own builds.
suck it up and play someone else's build until you have a firmer grasp of the fundamentals, also plenty of youtube videos with explanations of both basic and esoteric/complex mechanics... everybody was shit and lost as fuck at some point, it aint a big deal
I'm gonna play through the new stuff on softcore first so I know about stuff like that aoe that just fucking kills you in the Shavronne fight on the roof of the jail even though it looks like nothing.

The damage on dark pact (or whatever its called) was pretty impressive but it has a huge life cost to cast.
I think they'll all be decent.
If the Dark Pact Berserker build is as good as people seem to think it'll be then reddit will get it gutted so play that one while you can.

It is. Reaching 80 is relatively easy, but you shouldn't expect to get all the way to 100. Which is why you never aim your build for 100.
