I haven't played this game, I've only seen footage (probably less than 2 hours of it) and it doesn't look very casual. A bunch of normies are playing it right now but the game looks kind of tough actually.

Because its the latest release in the battle royale genre, so it scooped up the playerbase of all of the other battle royale games on steam. Plus those battle royale games usually have atrocious pay for play business models, and from what I understand, PUBG only has cosmetics in crates.

You answered your own question. People would drop PUBG in a second for a AAA version of the battle royale genre in the frostbite or similar engine. Honestly, the game's fun, but the gunplay is wonky, the performance is meh, it doesn't look great and the physics are pants-on-head retarded still.

Alot of mechanics are more punishing if you use them wrong

DotA is more deep than League, to be sure, but they aren't that massive differences in context of the genre. Where if you were to compare League with HotS (for example), the difference in skillcaps is hilariously massive.
