Can we get a thread for Mary Sues in video games? And I mean real ones. Not just the usual shit of "X is popular and therefore a Mary Sue"

>Mary Sue
>Lana still fails to get Link
Oh yeah, self-insert indeed
The cast still treats her like a main character on the same level as Link and Zelda. She even gets the Triforce of Power
They're not even hiding it at this point.
>mfw feminists and Sup Forumsirgins are happy because the other thinks she's female empowerment and the other wants to stick their dick into her
If she was a male...
Mary sue doesn't mean competent, and it doesn't mean self insert.
You people are retarded.
Sauce on the gif?
the new Mario Line Stickers.
>implying she(male) isn't
>She even gets the Triforce of Power
Of course she does, who else would safeguard it? You can't have them all in one place so Link, Zelda and Impa are out and the rest all needed to go back to their own worlds.
This board uses mary sue the same way it uses reddit and cuck, just another label to slap on something you dislike without having to explain what's wrong with it.
>The cast still treats her like a main character on the same level as Link and Zelda.
No ? Except for that "power of friendship" scene.
>She even gets the Triforce of Power
It was only an excuse to give it back to Ganondorf.
Hyrule Historia mentions that Impa is the destined guardian of Triforce of Power.
It sure as hell wouldn't give it to an OC
If she was a male she'd be Mario
I don't understand you OP.
You say real Mary Sues, right?
Okay, so, which developer self-inserted into Hyrule Warriors as Lana?
The fucking term is so bastardized at this point Mary Sue meant author self-insert.
Every scene she's in feels like someone's fanfiction.
Mary Sue meant self-insert and nothing more.
The fact that many self-insert characters were over-powered, over-loved, over-pure broken messes/self-fellatios was sometimes a consequence but not necesarily.
So again, which developer at Tecmo/Team Ninja self-inserted as Lana?
No, it doesn't. Self-inserting is just a common trait of a Mary Sue
For example. Bella Swan in Twilight was designed in a way for female readers to insert upon. She's not one single person's self-insert.
You got it backwards. Mary Sue IS A SELF INSERT and nothing more.
The name come from the halcyon days of the trekkie fandom, a girl wrote ST Fan Fiction called "Her codename was Mary Sue". It was a parody of Star Trek fanfics where authors self-insert as characters.
Bella Swan, as you define her, wouldn't be a Mary Sue, but a blank slate like Link.
>Bella Swan, as you define her, wouldn't be a Mary Sue, but a blank slate like Link.
You say that as if Link isn't a bit of a Mary Sue himself.
Nope, he's literally a blank slate.
He's the "link" between the player and the game world, he's not Miyamoto, Tezuka nor Aonuma self-projecting as an elfboy.
The old man, King Rhoam, however, has been confirmed to be Aonuma's Mary Sue. He wrote all of Rhoam's lines to feel like it's him who's talking to the player.
>Everyone character is a bit of a Mary Sue
When you have definitions as loose as this why do you even bother trying to discuss them.
>Rosalina
>Mary Sue
you what
Same question I asked OP.
Which Mario Galaxy developer self-inserted him/herself as a blonde space giantess?
That's why I asked for the most blatant ones. Mary Sueishness exists on a scale. Self-inserting is only a part of that scale. Lana is unrealistically perfect and blends in horribly with the Zelda universe
>The old man, King Rhoam, however, has been confirmed to be Aonuma's Mary Sue. He wrote all of Rhoam's lines to feel like it's him who's talking to the player.
Thanks for proving that a self-insert is not a Mary Sue by itself.
>Rosalina
>not a Mary Sue
why do people always defend this character.
Just because she was a slightly good written character for like one game does not mean she's above criticism, people
Wait, that's not right, Rhoam would be Gary Stu.
>The name "Mary Sue" comes from the 1974 Star Trek fanfic A Trekkie's Tale. Originally written as a parody of the standard Self-Insert Fic of the time (as opposed to any particular traits), the name was quickly adopted by the Star Trek fanfiction community. Its original meaning mostly held that it was an Always Female Author Avatar, regardless of character role or perceived quality.
>Self-Insert
Mary Sue means "self insert" character in a fanfic. The fact the term has been bastardized by underage imbeciles who think it means "character I don't like" is a different thing altogether.
Again, which developer inserted itself into the game? WHO is Rosalina a stand-in for?
I fucking swear, this is how terms loose meaning. It's like "weeaboo", which went from unhealthy obsession with anime to "liking anything remotely japanese".
>Mary Sue means "self insert" character in a fanfic. The fact the term has been bastardized by underage imbeciles who think it means "character I don't like" is a different thing altogether.
It means a character who is overly perfect. People who are self-inserting tend to write their characters this way. King Rhoam is Aonuma's vehicle to introduce characters to the game, but is a flawed character with minimal screen time. He's not a Gary Stu.
>It means a character who is overly perfect
No, it means self-insert
>Always Female Author Avatar, regardless of character role or perceived quality
>regardless of character role or perceived quality
Was she exclusive to the Hyrule Warriors games?
I don't understand why it's difficult to just say you think Rosailna or Lana is a shit character instead of having to rely on meaningless buzzword memes like mary sue or Lightning. Only autistic waifufags would fight you over an opinion like that, but slapping retarded labels on them just makes you look like a shitter incapable of original thought.
Yes.
Much like Rareware's extended Kong Family, though, Nintendo own her, so she could show up at any mainline Zelda game if they so desire.
>No, it means self-insert
I bet you think a faggot also means a bundle of sticks.
Language is dictated by the people who speak it and the term as evolved to refer to fan characters who are overly perfect and feel forced in comparison with the source material. Lana is overwhelmingly guilty of this, clearly receiving much more time and attention than actual Zelda characters.
term evolution =/= term corruption. This is how languages get bastardized and die.
Lana isn't any more of a "Mary Sue" (read: central focus) of the game than Midna was on Twilight Princess.
>Lana isn't any more of a "Mary Sue" (read: central focus) of the game than Midna was on Twilight Princess.
You say that as if Midna wasn't dangerously close to being a Mary Sue.
Not entirely, it was also to mock how certain Star Trek characters were literally perfect at everything they do despite seeming way too young and inexperienced to be as perfect as they are. At least that matches the definition I read about a month ago.
How is Mary Sue only referring to self-inserts? Back when I was growing up, Mary Sue or Gary Stu referred to a OP character who was given exclusive and special treatment/privileges by the main cast or series itself outside the MC often to a silly degree
Looking at it tho, that was the original meaning, but not necessarily the meaning its taken to form it later years after it.
She wasn't. She was a character and a plot device together, the was what binded the events of the game together.
Are you going to tell me that the Triforce in Zelda 1 is a Mary Sue because it's the cause of the central conflict? What about the crystals in Zelda 2, since they're also key to the plot!
Oh, oh! Also the Master Sword in ALttP since it was the weapon of Hylian legends!
Everything is a fucking Mary Sue! Fuck the actual meaning of terms! Fuck the language!
That fucking cloud blocking the sun is too perfect! Mary Sue!
>Back when I was growing up, Mary Sue or Gary Stu referred to a OP character who was given exclusive and special treatment/privileges by the main cast or series itself outside the MC often to a silly degree
How old are you? I am not even being insulting, I am honestly asking.
Even back on the Usenet days, Mary Sue reffered to "female author self-insert", and the term came from a Star Treck fanfic where the author woman self-inserted as an agent under the codename "Mary Sue".
The actual fic was a parody of self-inserts, too.
>She wasn't. She was a character and a plot device together, the was what binded the events of the game together.
I never said she was. I said she was close. She makes Link feel like the third wheel in several of the games big moments.
Who in the development team is self-inserting herself as Midna? As far as I know, her design wasn't even finalized by the TEAM until way late into development and not a single woman's creation.
Let's just say by 2005, Mary Sue came to mean what i said it meant.
*teleports behind you*
That seems about right.
And by then, the term was corrupted. Mary Sue reffers to a female character who's the author's self-insert.
Weeaboo reffers to someone with an unhealthy obsession with anime and manga and not someone like that history class professor who has a passing fascination with Feudal Japan.
We're not talking about the Star Trek days. We're talking about what the word Mary Sue means to people today. Self-inserting alone doesn't make a Mary Sue. Someone on KT clearly jerks it to Lana. It's not self-inserting but it's just as bad.
Lana is silly.
...
so what is the correct trope of characters like Lana, Rosalina, ect?
>Says Toon Link looks like a cat.
>Doesn't draw his cat-eyes remotely correctly
Autism triggered hard
it's even more infatuating when said character is only hot on fanart but said nerds are so delusional that their perception of the character is warped to unrecognizable degrees
this applies to all the mario girls
I don't know, overly-focused on?
It's quite hard because the story was written by an actual team of people with Lana/Rosalina/Midna in mind, and not a single person.
They're key to the overall plot, Probably Rosalina less so since without her the game would still be "Mario goes to space to save Peach".
This faggot right here, dear lord what a special snowflake.
Muh mysterious origin.
Muh demonic powers.
Muh giant robot.
Muh everyone loves me.
CS is just absolute trash.
*infuriating
>I don't know, overly-focused on?
You don't know because you actually do know the term most people who aren't 40 years old use and refuse to admit it.
...
You should just call it character you don't like
do u think rosalina is a well written & good designed character and a good addition to the mario series? i ask you this because you're an older person and most older video game fans seem to have a different opinion of newer characters than the younger fans. its an interesting perspective.
aaand the winner is
But it's not the same. I hate Linkle, but she isn't a Mary Sue
No but at times, she is.
Peach is more of a "mary sue" than Rosalina ever was.
...
peach is just thicc.
She isnt the pinnacle of writting but I like Koizumi and his team tried to make a character that's more complex than usual mainline Mario games' characters. Overall I like Rosalina over Princess Toadstool for having something more depth, as minimal as it may be.
No she isn't
Respectable opinion. I liked her in the first game but I think after the first games her character has been bastardized and corrupted
See here for both of these
Maybe i just hate the genius child trope, but the fact she is the best engineer in BLADE, one of the best fighters and a top tier chef annoys me.
She's been mostly on Spin-offs, so I dont necesarilly count those, but I will say I liked they made her playable in 3D World alongside Peach/Toadstool.
Fuck off "literally Hitler" fag. This is how words end up losing meaning. A moment of silence for
>Epic
>Literally
>Nazi
>Weeaboo
>Mary Sue
>Fascist
>special snowflake
>Triggered As a reference to actual PTSD, not triggered losing its meaning because we're mocking Tumblr
I can't believe it's the first time Peach's been playable since SMB2. That's ridiculous, Nintendo.
I'm happy Rosalina and Peach got in it though. Now they're opening up opportunity for Pauline and I hope we get to visit Sarasaland in the new game too. I just want to see all the Mario characters appear in a game and fleshed out for once. It's an opportunity they can't miss imho
Really Lynn? I'd say Elma is a more likely candidate.
Wow. That was cringe inducing.
>>Triggered As a reference to actual PTSD, not triggered losing its meaning because we're mocking Tumblr
Tumblr did that to itself
This guy wins my vote.
>Calling Sup Forums OC cringe-inducing on Sup Forums
Like. Pottery.
How is she a Mary Sue? Does she save herself?
Lucina for sure. Either a girl really wished she could be Marth or a guy designer wanted to dick Marth super bad but that would be gay
She's too perfect and a savior character. Her only flaw in-game is picking out bad clothing
I'm glad Rosalina, as far as I know, hasn't been a damsel in distress, but I think they should stop the "kidnap Peach" plots for a while and keep having multiple playable characters like 3D World did.
Hell, even the Galaxy games had playable Luigi. Different moves give also different ways to tackle obstacles, thus more replayability.
Fuck Toad. Replace him with Rosalina. 2 men 2 women team.
It's fucking Hyrule Warriors, a musou. It's as non-canon as it can get.
You could also list how she is as interesting as a piece of cardboard, and seems to like just fucking around instead of doing what she came to do.
Though all of the future children suffer from it (with Laurent wanting to grab the cake for being most useless), but Lucina might suffer it from the most since the plot focuses on her.
And on the subject of Awakening, I'd say Robin counts. Though the same goes for all the self inserts aside from Mark.
They brought in a new girl to the team with Awakening, didn't they?
And she was responsible for the "casual mode" and many of the characters, including Lucina.
So I say it is fair to call Lucina her Mary Sue.
I can't exactly hate that girl, though, since the regular mode was still in the game, and Tharja is one of my favorite characters.
In the sense that's she pure hearted and adored by everyone, how she's meant to be seen as flawless and special aside getting kidnapped all the time.
Casual was added in 11 iirc.
We've attained the Corn point, this thread is over bois.
This guy is so much of a Gary Stu that he got into Smash over every single good choice.
12, along with the demon known as Kris
12.
Though since that one never made it outside Japan, everyone mistakenly thinks that Awakening introduced Casual Mode.
While Corrin does qualify, his smash inclusion was just an advert, so it wasn't that bad, in a theory.
