Are there any fun games like Dragon Quest 3 and 9? I'm a huge fan of the character customization and making a unique party. Especially in 9 with the equipment affecting appearance.
Are there any good RPGs where you can customise your party like this? Multiplayer like in 9 is a bonus.

IX's was too lacking in personality for me. Your party aren't real characters, they're just there to fight. The main character is mute, it's the supporting cast who has to do everything.
Compare that to VIII, the hero was mute too, but just looking at him already gave you an idea. It also had entretaining party members.

I agree that 9 wasn't the best DQ game, but I really like the ability to make your own party. It's fresh to roleplay a bit more in a role playing game.
I'm guessing that 11 is more like 8 from what I've seen, can anyone confirm this?
The SaGa 2 remake for DS is like that, visual customization is not as in depth as DQIX but the actual gameplay is leagues above it if you really like customization and micromanaging, especially with four races that play differently from each other.

I loved IX, too. It's probably my favorite DQ title.
Man that game was what got me into Dragon Quest. Do accents really upset you that much that it makes a game unplayable?

III and IX are my favorites though, so we probably just have different taste. I couldn't get into VIII at all, the pacing kills it for me. Though IX's start is a pain in the but as well to be fair

Check out Etrian Odyssey, though it's fairly niche. The gameplay may not be to your liking, but with several classes and sub-classes to choose from, party customization is really fun.
Pretty sure you can play on the JP servers.

People will probably recommend the SNES version, but I have a huge soft spot for the GBC release. Everything is just faster and snappier and the IMO I think the GBC's soundchip does a better job with the soundtrack. Plus it has a new bonus dungeon not in any other version
But really the SNES version is great too and'll look a lot better. Just avoid the iOS/Android port. It's just a butchered snes version

Armamentalist was really great in 9. The element buffs were effective against the legacy bosses.

I've always like Palladins in DQ from gameplay to looks to the abilities. The Armamentalists are awesome designwise and flavourwise. And Martial Artists are super cool too.

Just got Angelo in VIII and I'm kinda liking the voices. Only character Ive used skill points on is Jessica but I'm starting to think I should just go crazy instead of going for some optimal build for each character.
V was so fucking good but I'm liking VIII a lot more and I'm thinking about buying VII at some later point.
