I think down the rabbit hole or some youtube series like that discussed the history of neopets well. I was familiar with its history until the purchase of viacom, but apparently there's still a lot thats happened since then, and apparently the site's on life support.

Large cooperator incompetence and misappropriated money/resources. Then they started firing the best original people and cutting the better content for shitty pay-2-play. Its the typical case of out-of-touch executives calling the shots and chasing old trends that are no longer rewarding and not listening to what the users wanted, which was important because a lot of Neopets was user generated/influenced.

Neopets was sickly when Viacom owned it, then when it sold to Jumpstart it went straight into the critical care ward. Even the most dedicated players who are still around are holding our breaths for "the day" when its all over for real.

Lack of updates. I stopped playing because the website looks like shit. It needs a revamp that appeals to the new generation of kids. I'm not sure what that means or looks like, but all I know is that it will be better than what it currently is right now.

I just went back now and it looks like shit on a 1080p screen: everything is small, you have to zoom in, and when you do zoom in, the menu looks blurred. Who in their right mind would buy this piece of crap, and keep it on life support for this long without making changes to it?

No clue. My mom got rid of them before I had the chance. All I remember is a ton of fucking drama. Went on for months. My mom was losing her shit. All the computers had to have the screens facing where my parents could watch.

True, but Neopets was not the kind of entity that could forgive that sort of thing. The original creators that ran the show were very in-touch with the userbase and a good chunk of the leftover staff did their best to keep the place fun even during Viacom's reign.

What I don't understand is how Viacom could fuck up a killer franchise like Neopets in the early 2000s. They already had McDonalds and other promotional tie-ins as well as multiple merch and card games and things. A viacom backed Nickelodeon cartoon scripted by the plot writers could have been very successful.

As soon as Viacom took over they gutted all the real-world tie ins and...god only knows what their angle was after that. The spent 2-3 years doing jack shit for the direction of the franchise only to role out the site-overhaul that no one wanted and paid items to dress up your pet which was also a contentious choice.
