I really should. Love the heck out of the online/universe series, so its sort of appalling that I've never gotten around to playing the originals.
But I did.
It's pretty good.
This.
It will endlessly rustle my jimmies that Sega will never bother with turn based JRPGs anymore, when Phanta helped push and define the modern elements we have now.
Instead, we live in the timeline where Final Fantasy is huge with microtransactions in just about all their games, and Phantasy Star is known more for the experimental 3D Diablo game than the actual original set of games.
lets be real here, they would probably fuck it up
Modern Sega would, but they had a chance with the PS2 remakes, which showcased Sega still had some good staff and could rework the formula to modern standards.
Almost done with PhantasyStar2, so you know what. I think I will.
What's the best Phantasy Star to start with?
IV because it's the only playable one.
You only need to play through the first 3 to understand the references, sort of like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest.
Review it for me because I can't beat the first dungeon.
The dungeons get worse.
>Loved the game when I was a kid, but never beat it
>Thought I was near the end of the game
>Go back and replay it
>There's a second planet
>I had barely started
Never even connected the dots, since I had played Phantasy Star Collection and knew that the series took place on multiple planets, but Motavia in PSIV felt too big on its own for Dezolis to be explorable.
Phantasy Star I is still pretty charming, since it's an old-school dungeon crawler with its own kind of flavor, and a semi-open nature that lets you explore three different planets from the start. PSII is a good game, but the early-game grind is fucking ridiculous. PSIII is just bad. PSIV holds up surprisingly well.
The stories are largely unconnected, but they take place in the same star system with the same over-arching villain, and the events of earlier games tend to make up the backstory of the events in later ones.
Nei dies
I loved it. I liked Wren's character design in 3 more, but 4 was great. Wish Alys could have been around for longer. I wasn't a huge can of Chaz
I played this back in the day. Where is 5 Sega?
It's in my backlog. I've tried to play twice but always drop it for something else.
At this rate, I'll never experience it
I wouldn't be surprised if V actually started development in the next year or so.
It seems that SEGA really want to bring back some older IPs.
But it would most likely be something based on the Online games, perhaps with a heavy single player focus.
Naw.
M8... m8. Those remakes were woeful.
>Will never get a Remaster of any of the old Phantasy Star Games
Sadness.
Unless you're a serious RPG oldfag definately 4. But 1 if you're a bad enough dude.
Fufufu
...
>Have to go though this motherfucker TWICE
PS2 sort of needed the dungeons themselves to be the main challenge, though. There were only 3 real bosses in the game, with 2 of them at the very end.
Alright, fine, but US will never get that, nor will we ever get a remaster of 4.
Wait, are the numbers teleport pads...
No. It's a pitfall dungeon.
Isn't this the series where a character fucking explodes
I might be remembering this wrong
They are holes. Each one is a one way ticket down. The stairs are the only way back up.
I can't. Sega decided to kill off the franchise in the west leaving us with the autistic hedgehog.
I did like two decades ago, it was overrated. I paid $80 for it, though, which is like $100 nowadays money. The problem with this series is that they really didn't care to design overworlds/labyrinths. The first game and the online ones were the only ones that got it right. Also, USA got screwed and got shitty music whereas Japan got good music. Exploration should be a big thing in RPGs.
PS1 > PS4 > PS3 > PS2
>Sega will never bother with turn based JRPGs anymore
Uhhh...Hello?
store.steampowered.com
Been in Japan for a good 8 years now, and I'm thinking I should buy the actual games. (They're like 800yen each)
Should I start from the beginning and play through them or should I skip any in the series?
I was under the impression that those were handed out to Compile Hearts and Idea Factory, with Sega just licensing it out.
The fan service and excessive cursing since "MUH MODERN ANIME" killed any enjoyment I had with the first in that series, as well as the very forgettable combat.
That is not a Sega game, you nep tard.
ALSO, should I buy the remasters instead? Are they like way better or?
u mad bro? XD
No, but are you 12?
I'd argue 1 is pretty playable. I mean it doesn't hold your hand and you do have to grind whenever you get a new party member, but its no worse than dragon quest 1 and 2.
Play the hellmode romhack
Ps4 > pso > ps2
Being a kid and my name being Alyssa playing ps4 was slightly disturbing
Rune still best husbando after all these years.
Kind of set my archetype for all men.
I remember deciding to level everyone to 99 in PS4... Rika hit lvl 99 then i discovered the horrifying level 99 glitch. Was a very, very sad day for 12 year old me.
Still loved the game to shit but... damn that sucked
If they come with the box and manual, sure.
What is hellmode romhack and what makes it good?
>The fan service
This isn't really fan service though. It only makes sense that after fighting monsters and exploring dirty dungeons for hours, you would want to get all the gunk and dirt on your body off of it when you find a period of calm when nothing's trying to kill you. It's really very sensible and practical
I remember it being $99.99 when it was released. I'm surprised it wasn't cheaper than $80
it's on my list
currently playing Lufia 1 however
Wasn't the price because of the cart itself?
There was a Toy-R-Us promotion where if you buy a Sega and a game they give you $20 gift card
Oh yeah, cartridge games were expensive as fuck, even more than games now. I remember getting Shining Force II instead for $75
They do, yeah.
Should I play the remasters?
what glitch?
The 'remaster' is a joke. It looks like a high schooler's project. It was a budget title when it was out. It exists, that's all it's good for.
I need to buy a genesis and a CRT.
DAMN DUDE.
Like they didn't improve on anything? Rugged.
Then, any tips for a first time player?
When a character hits lvl 99 it randomly reassigns everyones stats to a different character and reassigns special skill usage amounts too
So Wren for instance ended up with Hans healer stats in my save. Rune ended up getting one of the robots stats and with zero casting stats was nuking for like 20dmg.
Play through Phantasy Star 1 with me Sup Forums.
We're trying to find a cat.
Some one give me the Sega Collection for ps2. Should I bother playing the three Phantasy games included?
Okay.
Wow. Back in the days where companies couldn't just patch the game. That SUCKS dude.
Are the games even good
>Should I play the remasters?
NO. Absolutley not.
4 is great, but it's kind of tainted by the Squarefags who only played 4.
Basically MGS3 syndrome.
Thank you Aris, but our cat is on another planet.
Give me the cat.
1 is charming.
2 is fairly progressive for the genre at the time but has dungeons made by a giraffe.
3 is
4 is on par with FFVI and Chrono Trigger and all that.
Thank Sega of America for this
gaijinworks.com
1 is the greatest RPG of the 80's, one of the few early Japanese ones to top the wonder and exploration in the original western PC titles, and both a technical and artistic masterpiece.
If it had FF1's combat it would be.
>starting this argument
Run away, fag, you'll have 100% chance thanks to retarded programmers.
2 came in 89.
>ut has dungeons made by a giraffe.
Was it really 89? PSII is leagues above everything else then given the time.
So what? Phantasy Star 1 (ONE) is the best RPG of the 80's. Sounds like you have no point to make!
I don't want to talk shit about 2, so I'll cop out and say I'm going by Western release dates.
I mean, it's 16 bits, that's like, double the bits.
Pretty much. Not only this but other Mega drive games too. Revenge of Shinobi, Thunder Force 2, Golden Axe... Shit was crazy back then.
Best way to play it?
Maybe the Wii's virtual console?
Can I play IV without playing the others? I really don't want to play through the other three cause I don't have the patience for much grinding, but I really want to try IV
This was definitely the Phantasy Star that modern PS borrowed from the most.
Dark Falz/Dark Force was always a thing
But this introduced guilds and quest counters
Shitloads of side stories
It made CAST's a big deal (there were only a few who came and went in PS3)
It brought back Newmans with a vengeance and established Rika as the Eve of all Newmans. (Nei was rad but doesn't count cause she croaked with Neifirst)
Too bad if you check perfect works, Chaz died like a bitch and left her as a single mom only 3 years later. No troll.
I prefer 1 too, lol
2 is worth noting since you came with technical aspect and it's one the first 16 bit rpg
Knowing japanese and playing the saturn version
Not a lot of options really.
If you can't into crts, then you should just emulate. Sonic's UGC is better emulated than the Steam version, IIRC.
Why do you want to try IV then?
There really isn't a lot of grinding.
All the grinding is in any of these games is maybe 20 minutes at the very start.
From those little level boosts, you get the momentum.
You can play it without the others. You don't need knowledge of the other three but it has a little more nostalgia value cause it throws back to the other 3 games at multiple points. It was truly the game to end the 4 game series.
I'd suggest reading some minor spoilers on the other games before playing 4 standalone for slightly more enjoyment. If you're trully commited to playing 4 only I could post a few in black from other games that would probably enhance 4 for you.
Fuck you, 1 and 2 are grind city. You lying piece of shit.
"Not much grind"
Jfc
Snap on a game genie and put on money cheat.
Anytime Phantasy Star is brought up I see the same things said: I-III are good for their time but require a shitload of grinding, and PSIV is one of the greatest classic JRPGs that somehow has basically been forgotten about.
20 minutes I can definitely handle. Might as well try them then I guess.
Thanks but naa, I think I'll try the earlier ones after all if it'll make me appreciate IV more
I've been playing 1 right now for the past hour and I only had to grind for a sword at the start.
I'm going to define "grinding" here as, "Needing to battle more than the natural path".
there's an antigrind mod for PS2 to make the pacing more like PS4, it's great
also play the PS2 text adventures for character backstories when you run into them in the game
You made the right choice. The payoff in IV if you've played 1 and 2 is huge, just like playing 2 after 1.
Don't understate how cool and moving the story in these games can be.
Also IV is only held up like that because it's the most FF-like, which is like saying new DOOM is the best because it's most like CoD.
The start of PS1 is infamous, the rest is nbd unless you use a guide and underlevel, or want to buy every item.
Are we talking Dragon Quest III levels of payoff?
3 is very unique for a game from its time, but the music is so ridiculously bad that many people stop playing.
Here, have a taste.
youtube.com
The menus and statuses are also absolute dick and the games clanky.
On the bright side, its like fire emblem genetics simulator WHO U GONNA FUGG???
Except it goes more than 2 generations so things get pretty wacky if you've been getting your bone on!
Opinions on Phantasy Star Online? I played it a little bit on my cousin's Gamecube when I was little, have always wanted another crack at it since
I thought it was kinda cool at first, expecting it to eventually transition into something else. Christ that would get infuriating.
>gaijinworks.com
Is that legit what happened? Is the poster bullshitting?
Its just fine even if a bit disjointed. Episode 2 really helped it feel a lot more gathered in story.
Blue Burst in the PC is Episode 4. I had a lot of fun with it. There's free servers to play on these days and they feel just like ye olden days and everyones pretty chillax.
It's good if you're in that sort of mindset.
By mindset I mean, playing online with three other people in 2001, grinding for loot.
If you're expecting some sort of 9/10 story and Demon's Souls world building, it's not all there.
It does once the command inputs are over with in-game.
The best part of 3 was doing the Escapipe trick.
It does. It doesn't really ever get good, though. The overworld music also adds an instrument for every person that joins your party. It has some decent tracks, especially the title music. But the sountrack isn't as good as the other games.
But SoA dindu nuffin, he was a good boy! Sup Forums and /vr/ told me so!
