I recently replayed it with fuckload of mods.
Stuff like removal of retarded kid and dreams, some gameplay changes, different ending etc.
And I had fun, had best gameplay in my opinion due to like 63 weapons to chose from.

I remember it being OK throughout. Then the ending happened and then this happened.

I'm playing it right now. Was adept paragon looshep the whole way the first time, now doing renegon femshep infiltrator > vanguard > vanguard.

I really like that they still managed to keep it about the characters in the ways that matter. Lots of conversation aboard the normandy and walking into a room to see a character having a conversation with other is particularly nice.

On gameplay, the expansion of power combos beyond just warp detonations is great, but as a vanguard detonating them with charge, they are absolutely fucking blinding. The infinite smoke and deployed turrets any time cerberus appears is fucking garbage.

Really the only grievous issue with it was the ending.

I will never understand people who say ME 3 was "pretty good" until the ending. Okay, we all agree that the ending was shit, but the rest of the game was mediocre as hell, and the story was inconsistent with ME2, and heck, there was so much laziness in design all around. How the fuck can anyone sit down after ME and ME2 and play 3 and think "huh, that's pretty good"?

Remember all those side missions that were just multiplayer maps where cerberus guys spawn fucking everywhere for fucking ever? They just aren't fun.

Pretty much everything wrong with ME3 is the main plot, which is also the biggest complaint against ME2. Blame Mac the Hack for the main plot after 1 being garbage, but it was always everything else that made mass effect good. So, set aside the main plot (and ending), roll your eyes at the 20ish minutes total of starchild and kai leng, and ME3 is a good game, both in the combat and in the characters.

the whole game was stupid and lazy. They didn't bother to set anything up in ME2 so ME3 was just stupid contrivances

Bigger question is how can anybody say that 2 is great and 3 is shit when the gameplay is the same and the plot is equally retarded.
