Same guy that played in the infamous Doom gameplay video from them.
>no black male white female romance
>no gay relationships
>no cinematic storytelling
>no easy gameplay for comfy time while I shitpost on Twitter
Why did Sonic Mania fail so hard, Sup Forums?
these people just release click bait articles, desu
Two Dimensional plot, no memorable characters, voice acting is nearly non-existent, does nothing to address social issues or race in it's universe or allegorically in ours.
4/10
And what are those problems?
>Polygon
I DON'T NEED THE AG
the problem is that sonic was never good
You don't need to be good at video games to criticize them. If anything, a more casual perspective is more valuable to the general public.
>Sup Forums image
pottery
>ragequit Dark Souls after an hour due to dying to the Asylum Demon multiple times and never touched it again
>spazzed out on Twitter at Bloodborne for not being "accessible" enough
>took over 8 hours to clear the fishing village stage in Nioh while co-oping with another Polygon writer and ultimately finished the game in 100 hours
>was so bad at D44m that Bethesda put out a free demo of the first level to dispel the notion that the game in any way resembled his gameplay
>took 2 hours to clear the first level of Vanquish
Is he /ourguy/?
Look, it's just common sense. The opinion of a Sonic fan is not important, since they've played every game in the series. Their perspective does not represent normal gamers.
He's the guy who makes me feel less of a shitty player. We need more guys like that!
>someone who is better at the game and thus has more knowledge of how the game works on a mechanical level's opinion is not important
>someone who is terrible at the game and thus has a poor impression of how it plays due to lack of willingness to play it correctly's opinion is important
I bet you're one of those fucking faggots who think that speedrunners's opinions of a game are invalid somehow.
Was he also the one who wants games to have a "skip gameplay" feature or was that some other faggot?
and that's the problem with vidya reviews, it's extremely subjective to a point where a simple number won't do
Nah, that was a fat woman from Bioware.
Where's the interracial marriage? Where's the positive female representation? Casting a white male in Republican Red as the villain was a start, but it's not enough
>you don't need to understand film to be a film critic
I mean yeah if we're going by youtube comment standards.
>if more of what Sonic is what you want
what did he mean by this? it really seems like gaming journalist sites don't proof-read or have an editor
>defending Polygon
There's one thing being casual at video games and then there's down right bad. You're pretty fucking autistic.
So where is the full review?
of course you don't need to be good at videogames to cober them, but only if you're presenting yourself as a casual consumer like your audience
if you're a paid professional "game journalist" andd try to asspull that excuse, it's the same as saying
>you dont't need to taste food to be a gourmet critic"
"you don't need to have any cultural baggage at all when criticizing films and books"
"you don't need to study old shit to be an historian, just start reading newspapers from today onwards"
better yet
>you don't need to study to be X"
and then, all professionals have the same intellectual level as consumers, rendering them no better than the people they are spewing opinions towards.
remind me what makes them "professionals" again?
People always say the number is just arbitrary and you need to read the text.
If you read the text in 90% of vidya reviews, it reads like a high school paper trying to stretch in order to hit the minimum word count.
>Polygon
I hate censorship but Polygon has to go
It's simply too much insult to life itself
...
Because I know you haven't all seen it
youtube.com
Nah. He's full of good ones, though.
>Polygon
>the opinion of someone who is biased towards the franchise
Seems kinda stupid now, doesn't it?
>You don't need to be good at video games to criticize them.
You don't have to be an MLG pro to criticise them, but if you're being paid to review them, it should be expected that you can actually handle a decent challenge. There's a difference between being a Chris-chan tier autist and having a decent depth of experience which you can draw sound conclusions from.
This. Post one from a good review site.
I agree, but there's a difference between casual/bad and mentally retarded. Try to guess where Polygon was.
And now he's leaving Polygon to go to art school.
>If anything, a more casual perspective is more valuable to the general public.
You haven't seen this guy play video games or you wouldn't be saying that. He's not casual. He's bad. If your level of play is below average, your opinion is not useful to the average player.
>You don't need to be good at video games to criticize them.
Just like how you don't need a driver's license or any experience behind a wheel when you're testing cars for a gearhead magazine! Oh wait.
any review for any kind of product works like that and it's not "extremely subjective".
there is a certain degree of objectivity when pointing out how cliched and shallow a story can be, how hamfisted characters are, how unbalanced combat is, how stiff the controls are, and so ones advocating the lack of objective measures are exactly the same ones advocating that everyone can do reviews without any qualifications, so they can completely ignore striving for quality in their writing and compensate their own lack of skill, knowledge and effort.
>it's not fair, I wanna play too!
>fuck off Jimmy, you are playing so poorly you're dragging the whole team down
>NO! I DONT NEED TO BE GOOD TO PLAY WITH OTHERS! IM TAKING MUH BALL HOME REEEEE
>Literally having difficulty shooting nonmoving targets
Why is he even bothering with this career path? It's obvious that he hasn't spent more than an hour playing video games in his whole life.
right. and you need to have gone to culinary school to be a food critic
You're right, you don't need to be good at them. The problem here is that the media generally cannot even be described as competent when it comes to either gameplay performance or critique.
You should have at least eaten a meal without getting any food on the floor and walls.
>No Switch score
>Wonders why the game doesn't play itself
You generally do have to have experience on the field somewhat, yes. Why else would anyone care what you think about food?
it never gets old
there's a difference between being "good" and competent.
these enablers don't mean "good" as in speedrun-tier level of gameplay, they are literally excusing incompetence as the industry standard.
>Rather than fix them
Oh, OK Polygon. So easy eh? Fix them.
Fucking shit website, fucking shit review.
Thats why Arthur Gies gives walking simulators like Gone Home 10/10. Because they are the only games he can actually finish.
>if more of what sonic is what you want
wat
Shame the guy who was actually really looking forward to Sonic Mania from Polygon was also the one that got fired from them because he kept sexually harassing women or whatever. He would've written a more glowing review instead of this person who just sounds bad at Sonic games completely.
The thing is that it absolutely doesn't matter who writes about these objective qualities
Any "professional" reviewer's article has exactly the same value as some random fuck's steam review
Then maybe games should play themselves? Just have a lower difficulty called "Auto".
Think about it. People love let's plays.
Don't troll with Gwenpool please, thanks.
He literally uses the right analog stick to aim a last resort. He relies on walking the crosshair onto the enemy.
This is what I'd expect the first few hours to look like playing halo in 2001.
it should be called "Journalist"
how to spot a garbage review in one big red flag: the conclusion is "it's good for the fans / it's more of the same / you'll like it if you're into that sort of thing"
you admit your review describes the game so poorly that only someone who's already had contact with the source material before or someone who actually tries the game first will be actually informed of how it works
user never talk about this again
You know its coming. Games will come with a "lets play" feature that is recorded gameplay data from famous youtubers.
>The same website that gave Her Story the Game of the Year of 2015
Why am I not surprised.
I was only complaining about the grammar of it
I think if something is a remake or rehash it's fair to say you'll be satisfied if you just wanted more of the exact same
>it absolutely doesn't matter who writes about these objective qualities
well, shit consumers will be satisfied with shit reviews alright. a fool and his money yadda yadda
>you don't have to be in expert in video games in order to criticize them! If anything, a more uninformed perspective is more valuable!
Fuck yourself to death
...
>Posting Gwenpool
Oh for fuck sake, she's even leaking out onto other boards.
>a videogame has to adress social issues.
I'm so sick and tired of having this fucking discussion every time some idiot like you says he's too stupid to filter out reviews
Here's a foolproof way to never accidentally buy a shit game on steam
>find game that looks interesting
>click negative reviews
>ignore any reviews that are less than 10 lines long, read the ones that specifically list pros and cons
>read the cons and decide for yourself whether they'd ruin your enjoyment of the game
>if loads of people complain about bugs, find out whether they have been patched out in the meantime
That's fucking it
I'm not saying every single steam review is amazing (particularly the positive ones can pretty much be ignored cause they're full of dumb memes), I'm saying some fucker being a "professional" reviewer who plays games for 2 hours to make his review deadline does not magically have the secret to figuring out if a game is good
So you agree with me?
I like the idea someone in an earlier thread mentioned of reviewers having to show their gameplay even if it that would have its own problems (fake it, only show selected highlights, accuse anyone asking for it of being "something")
>Any "professional" reviewer's article has exactly the same value as some random fuck's steam review
The difference being visibility and the perception of getting an expert opinion. Ideally, that perception would be corrected by getting burned from bad purchases but marketing and hype are too strong.
>if anything, the teacher should be even dumber than the students so they can feel smarter and more motivated to learn!
>Posts Gwenpool and defends Polygon
Typical
thank you for gracing my blue board
yes, that's why I was answering to you and not that post while also referring to those people as "these" and "them" on my post instead of "you"
>As it turns out, Sonic Mania is maybe too faithful. Sonic & co. are capable of incredible speed, it's true, but there's a sluggishness as they work their way toward it. It's not just stopping that takes a long time, which, hey, at least that makes sense. There's a windup to just about everything, from movement to jumping.
So he hates Sonic for being Sonic
Got it
just kill yourself
Yeah as I said here a reviewer being an expert is a laughable thought
Hell, you can even do the same thing for console games by checking metacritic scores, it works surprisingly well unless you're a retard wanting to buy games day 1 while they're being review-bombed by consoledrones
i have 3000 hours in dota but someone who has never played a moba before has a more valuable opinion on why its shit apparently.
You all should check just for the comedy gold comments
wow holy shit she's a lot uglier in profile
>paying attention to Polygon in any way
Kill yourself
>Arthur Gies
that means it's a double negative right?
The guy isn't casual, he legit doesn't actually want to play videogames. I suspect the only reason he's even doing this job is to help pad his resume to get a real writing job somewhere else.
You both have shit opinions, to be honest. I find it fucking hilarious how people with over 1000 hours carefully dissect every little issue the game hs, but skim all the features and fun and ideas that made them play this game for thousands of hours to begin with.
No clue, I don't follow e-celebs and "journalists"
>"le Sonic's game design is inherently flawed from having slow platforming despite the characters being able to run fast" is baby steps for pseudo intellectual wankery to make you look smarter, just like saying "dude, like Rosebud was his bobsled" when praising Citizen Kane as being the best film EVAR
Well at this point it is inherently flawed, yes.
That greentext is completely misplaced, you're making it sound like you're paraphrasing the guy's point
It's still a Sonic Game.
Even the best ones are mediocre.
How bad can you possibly be? The only 2D Sonic I've ever completed was CD and even I was able to get through Mania with little issue.
if you can't write for your life, your opinion on it is going to be shit alright.
a good reviewer must also be a good writer. knowledge alone means nothing if you end up omitting most of what matters and take your time writing nonsense out of ignorance over how reviews should work.
I've seen plenty of steam reviews of people wih hundreds of hours of playtime and all they state is how much fun they are having
Did he ever explain what these "problems" were?
sorry, I know phoneposting is cancer
>the only reason he's even doing this job is to help pad his resume to get a real writing job somewhere else
This describes 90% of the game reviewers whose scores appear on Metacritic
>guys the game is soooo hard the first time around
>after you git gud the game becomes more enjoyable!
I'm glad this casual figured out video games at least. They are a lot better than people crying about lives in general and wishing they hadn't been put in the game.
He's right in that someone with no genre experience should never review a game in said genre. You have nothing to compare the game to.
>art school
What the hell can you possibly learn from art school now that the internet exists?
...
he concludes the review stating that the game's issues stem from the game being too faithful to the classics.
so basically, Sonic is bad because it's Sonic. maybe it would have scored better if it was Mario instead.
Smart user is creating archive, great job!
Sonic is already a legacy, changing something so drastic as power of momentum, which is at the core of the gameplay, would make it not Sonic, at least not 2d Sonic, which, in turn, would make this game as a tribute completely irrelevant. The game is here to add features and content, not to mess with the formula. In fact, even slight changes to this idea is enough to make fans rage, so they were right with this decision.
This is why this "criticism" is not really a criticism of game as a product, but a rant on the idea what Sonic should have been. It's like complaining about base building in CnC. Okay, I'm willing to have this discussion, but not in a review of Red Alert 2, and I will not accept this as a con that brings the score down. This is fucking retarded.
How to get ripped off buying art supplies and lugging that shit on sidewalks for mediums you'll never use
