They didn't do it right. They literally copied every meme Triple A game out there but "It's ok when Nintendo does it".
They filled every checkbox that gains bonus points for game journos and normies. Add the fact that it's Zelda and here you have all the 10s.

They took many inspirations, but fixed + added their very own flavor to things.

Nothing but player's own curiosity and motivation to improve your survival chances push you forward in BotW, and there's practically no restrictions put on what you can and can't do after the short "tutorial" scene in beginning.

That horrendous 2-tone shading coupled with the ultra bare-bones textures is such an instant turn-off.
You wouldn't even believe how much i despise that look.
It's also open world with no attempt to justify or benefit from that decision, so I see no point in even getting it.

Nah, they had some experience. XCX was amazing at worldbuilding and explo, better than Zelda for exploration. Then again, They had the advantage to have alien biome to work with, while Zelda stayed in the normal ''realist'' range

It was the game I needed in order to realize that there was literally nothing they could offer with the Switch that I would want. Smash Bros, MK8, and XCX, along with the Wii/WiiU Virtual Console, means the Wii U is the Ninty console I will ever need.

Probably in the minority, but I liked the seeds and shrines. I don't really care about the tangible item I got, the puzzle in and of itself was the reward

easy to execute sure, but not everyone you see will immediately click on what you need to do. Even then it's still enjoyable to solve puzzles

Freedom in an open world game is what most people want. making it so none of "main quest" is actually mandatory to beat allows everyone to tackle the game differently

It's all about experimentation really. You can easily beat the game by just hitting everything with your sword and climbing every surface, but I found it better to play more with the physics. I managed to ride a metal plate almost to the top of a mountain, one of the most memorable things I've done in any game

I haven't done that, but I gotta say, exploring the world of XCX sounds way more memorable to me, as does the story of NieR (not Automata).
