I dont know how anyone holds SH1 in the same regard as 2 and 3. Its really nowhere near as good.

The way I see it is it was the first one and is held in great regard for jumpstarting the series and bringing to the forefront a survival horror that emphasized HORROR and not jump scares. Sort of in the same way Demon's Souls is revered by some. I played SH1 and Demon's first, and I love them each for what they did for their respective genres, but they aren't my favorites of their series'.

This is the key right here that a lot of "survival horror" games forget. People are naturally scared of what they don't understand, so when they spill it all out for us - this is what this is, here's how this works, etc. - they're helping us to understand, and thus cheapening the effect. Ambiguity adds so much to horror.

if only i could share what feelings i had towards Silent Hill. played the first on my playstation at the release, then waited for 2nd game reading pre-reviews in journals, bought 2cd license and was blown away. then waited for the 3rd game and ordered a dvd to my shithole, waited for month and it finally came. 4th game was different but i still loved it because of the amazing atmosphere.
i can't even replay them now because remember every little detail too good. those games were so interesting..i've read official lore books so many times and discussed it on forums. where did those people and time go

I feel jealous when I think about the people who played SH1 at release. I have this image of an innocent child who wants to play this new "scary" game everybody talks about only to be met with one of the best horror games ever made even 20 years after.
I started with SH2 on a whim and was captivated as I progressed through the game, then I played SH1 and was blown away. I bet the game game nightmares to many children throughout the world.
