It has nothing to do with the characters. The Werehog, Classic Sonic, and the wisps are all just as bad.

Sonic Tails and Knuckles were good in Adventure 1.

Tails was good. Knuckles was okay. At least we got memes out of Knuckles in the adventure games.

SEGA thought "stop with all the un-Sonicy gimmicks and excess characters" meant "no teammates or variation at all, also maybe a gimmick still pls".
