Sonic Mania or S3&K?
S3&K is consistently better.
It's close, but I still prefer S3&K (especially the Complete version). Mania fells like it loses steam at the end.

If we assess the new zones compared to the old zones - I would still take Hydrocity, Mushroom Hill and Flying Battery over Press Garden, Mirage Saloon and Titantic Monarch.
3&K is the epitome of the series and will probably forever remain that way

It doesn't work that way, Mania is built upon 3's legacy, mechanics, etc. It wouldn't exist as it is without 3.
Sonic Mania's low points are so distracting from the overall greatness of the game, sucks, they literally could have removed 2 entire zones and the game actually would have been better.

Mania was pretty good, but S3&K was completely original, and the 'story' was a lot more compelling, Mania felt too rehashy to be a proper sequel, although I understand that and being connected to forces are completely SEGA and Iizuka's fault, not the Mania teams.

I like Press Garden, Mirage Saloon and Studiopolis all more than those. Except Hydrocity, which I also think played better in S3.
I died the first time I played it due to having not played Mean Bean Machine in like 10 years, but after I remembered how every play was a breeze.

I played through S3&K and Sonic 2 again yesterday, played through Mania today.
It's definitely better, and the most consistently good Sonic game. There aren't shit stages like Sandopolis that you dread playing again. Level design, enemy design, boss design. All are better in Mania.
Only thing I wish it had was a little cutscene between every zone like S3&K had.

Haven't played Mania yet but 3K is really something else and I doubt it will ever be surpassed as my favorite game of all time. That game is too insane in just how much attention to detail from the music, to the visual presentation, to the story, to the art style, to the art direction etc. and how all of these connect so seamlessly to one-another. I could write a damn book just gushing about the genius the of 3K.

No you fucking retard that is not the reason. The reason CD is the worst is because the level design is blocky as shit and because the levels are too short. The game was made with exploration in mind first and foremost and forgets about the speed and platforming. The platforming in CD is actually garbage.

Like I said Sonic 1 is just an overall more polished and better designed game.

>no zones as badly designed as Oil Ocean and Metropolis(don't get me wrong I still like these zones but they have their issues)

>special stages are dogshit in sonic 2 while the special stages in 1 are my favorites(Blue Sphere is my 2nd fave)

Also Insta-Shield is weaker in Mania, I can go through the spiked balls on Flying Battery Act 1 boss and they're bigger than Sonic, however in mania I have trouble going through smaller projectiles.
S3K is vastly better than S2, I'd even rather S1 over S2.
This boss if fucking great fanservice but I can't help but feel like it's going to feel more annoying than fun in the long run.
