HGSS was the same as the first game, with no actual improvements aside from modernized mechanics.

Crystal was superior in any way. It had the suicune story and animated sprites. I really can't see myself spending bucks on inferior versions.

The 2D games don't take very long to mash through text boxes.
But even doing that is slower in SM for some fucking reason, on top of having to watch animations and camera swoops and shit between text boxes

If SM's constant "story" interruptions actually had some substance it wouldn't be a problem, but 90% of the cutscenes and dialogue exist for no reason other than to get in your way.

Lance is kind of tough gen 1. Mostly because there isn't a whole lot of good ice types or many ice type moves and dragon types were almost as good as psychic types. Dragonite hits like a damn truck with physical hyper beam.

Gen 2 onwards though he's always been pretty wimpy. Mostly because much more available ice types with decent typing and ok stats and gen 2 having pretty low levels anyway. (The only gym leader one would have trouble with as a kid is the one with Milktank and even then they literally give you the opportunity to hard counter it via a trade)

The only problem HGSS have is being too faithful to the shitty gen 2 games, which is why shit like exists.

GS have horrendous teams and balance, and the remakes couldn't fix that because they kept them the same.
Even so, there's no reason to play GS anyway. Slow as molasses games, ugly visuals and shitty "color"
