If you are interested in seeing homage and understanding the context of their appearance than Production order is helpful.
If you are looking to get yourself into the franchise then start at Mania and then let your curiosity take you onward.
If you wanna know what mania generally plays like; play Sonic 3 & Knuckles first. Mania's basically the same as that gameplay wise with one different ability for sonic (drop dash) added to the mix.
The others are good games, but S3&K is the closest approximation of what you're getting by far.
Yes you should play the classics before Mania
I think Mania's great presentation is instead a good way to encourage you to play other games in the series.
You'll be exposed to some top-tier level design, and from there you can compare what you do and don't like from the games you play afterwards.
Play the classics but you may as well drop 1 after Green Hill Zone. There's a reason nothing else from it ever really gets referenced.
Titanic Monarch straight up copy/pastes a bit from Scrap Brain tho
2bh, no. Play Mania first because you'll be getting everything fresh.
Mania suffers bad from "you 'member this?" tropes that become a little nauseating. I imagine I wouldn't have felt as fatigued by it all if I didn't get to think "you just lifted that mechanic from [Mega Drive game]"
Probably. Its pure nostalgic bait.
Just play 1,2 and 3. I don't know if they did CD.
Is it possible to emulate the phone ports of Sonic 1 and 2 on PC?
That actually makes sense
Mania is the first sonic game I've ever owned.
Never even completed a level past green hill zone before this game and its very good.
You should play the classics regardless. They're good. But it's not like you have to play them to play Mania
they did
There's more CD than there is 1 in this game.
It'll give you a bit more context with a lot of the easter eggs you'll find in the game but other than that no
every sonic game is pretty self contained
Use Bluestacks, Nox, or some other android emulator.
Let's have some fun with it.
Sonic 1 and 2 romhack, then CD on Steam, then Sonic 3 Complete romhack. Play those in that order and you're bound to have a good time as well as playing what I would say is the definitive version until 1 and 2 get proper console/PC releases.

No. Never use spin dash in Sonic 1.
Sonic mania rekindled my love for the franchise. 1 and 2 where part of my childhood but that's it. Played a bit of 3 and CD but never beat them. Planning to buy the classics again on steam when I'm done with mania
>Should i play the classics before Mania
Yes. You should.
really nice to see Sonic not being a smug cunt for once... That's the Sonic i knew when i was a kid. Not that sarcastic edgelord we have today
play 3&k and only 3&k
Nice hat Knuckles
I'll see you in court
Knuckles' hat design is a reference to Nack in the GameGear game Triple Trouble. Penders can't do shit.
Mania will spoil the other games. Play the classics first.
>Sonic
>sarcastic edgelord
How?
Isn't that just American Sonic?
yes, you have my permission
Scrap Brain and Starlight are worth playing.
No, originals are over hyped, just play Mania, it cuts out all the tedious shit.
They remix the stages to be different enough though. If anything he may come ro appreciate it more with a little perspective
I used to believe this until I actually played through 1 properly.
Shit, the final fucking boss gets referenced.
you literally cant play the classics anymore you cunt thwy do not exist
Will I like Mania if the last ones I liked were the Sonic Advance games?
Sonic was the smuggest cunt in the classic era. The issue with today's sonic is that he's presented more like a standard bland saturday morning cartoon protagonist than a lovable asshole with a secret heart of gold like in the 90s Sonic OVA.
And Spring Yard.
Nah, Sonic was never good.
Absolutely.
>Maniafags will defend this
Hell yeah motherfucker
If I preorder Mania right now will i get Sonic 1 or was that for the people who preordered before the original release date?
Absolutely play S3&K, try the others but know they've got their problems.
>Green Hill Zone was playtested far more than the rest of the game and it shows
>2's special stages are bullshit desu, don't even think of bringing Tails along without a friend controlling him
>CD's exploration focus is cool but the level design is often the result of going hog wild with a level editor (both soundtracks get fucking baller though)
So for shits and giggles I installed the PS4 remote play app on my PC expecting it not to work because the only PS4 I've used is sitting in the office at my job halfway across town. But to my surprise it not only found the PS4, it was able to connect to it too with an acceptable amount of input delay. Now I can finally play Mania with my USB Saturn controller like god intended.
It's a pretty janky setup to be fair, but it's enough to tide me over until the 29th
I got Sonic permanently stuck in the mean bean machine after winning. I could move around in the little box and sort of jump up, and then I got him lodged up somewhere and I think he fell off screen, but I had to restart the whole stage.
Shit m8 the ps4 controller has an exception dpad was it really worth the effort?
It's literally the same game
>Green Hill Zone was playtested far more than the rest of the game and it shows
>There is literally a glitch at the start of the level where you avoid a bottomless pit and fall into Knuckle's part of the level
Thoughts on Taxman saying a sequel would pull from Game Gear zones?
>sarcastic edgelord
If anything Sonic from Adventure onward is kind of a chill surfer dude, classic Sonic was bigger on having an impatient attitude.
please respond
Like I said, I don't own a PS4, I'm just streaming from the one sitting at job. Also, I never liked the PS4 dpad with its separated buttons. It's just not my thing.
Could be cool, would be nice to have some Advance stages as well
...
I was thinking more in terms of how well it played; I know that "gotta go fast" was marketing more than the games themselves but Marble Zone's still an odd approach for a Sonic level (and Labyrinth Zone is a pain in the ass even for a water level).
I never encountered the glitch you mentioned, but kid me played Tails and always lost a life to that drop in Ice Cap Zone.
The physics engine is also a little tighter. Sonic jumps a little higher, and things fall a little faster.
Great game though. I'm on my first playthrough.
It's how to get a special ring within like 5 seconds in GHZ act 1
You have a source for that? It'd be an interesting call-out to say the least, especially since these levels would need to be drastically revamped to work.
What should actually happen
The levels felt completely different imo. The "remember this" feeling applies more to Generations
Act 1 of every old stage is pretty much the same stage but with Act 1 parts and Act 2 parts mixed together
Oh, I was talking about GHZ in Sonic 1, I thought you were greentexting about that.
Play Sonic 1,2,3, CD, & Knuckles and MAYBE Triple Trouble for the best experience.
Some of the references are as simple as borrowing level design elements, you'd only get those if you're extremely familiar with the games.
I think the point of this game was lost on you

japanese people can't resist the puyo
>spoilers in the title
wow even jap cunts are clickbaiting faggots
A sequel pulling from the lesser known or played sonic games would be great.
I was hoping that speedruns of this game would be glitched up shit shows, but it's looking like that's going to be the case.
its all the same shit, the only unique sonic games are the 3d ones and theyre trash
I was honestly expecting the Mirage Saloon 1ST boss to be a callback to the train from Sunset Park, but no. If a Mania 2 has Game Gear stages, that's going to be a gaurenteed stage, as I'm sure Taxman and Stealth know of the demand for it.
How is Mania speed-wise? I was replaying S3K earlier and one thing that annoys me is the slow acceleration.
To my knowledge, acceleration is the same for every Genesis Sonic game and Mania
It feels fucking great. Rolling down a hill gets you acceleration really fast.
Once you get good at using the drop dash things will feel even faster
Considering they're still good games I'd say yes. Don't be a "Mania is the only good sonic game" type like some people have been being lately. Especially since some level design is lifted straight from the old games and the only new core mechanic is the drop dash which isn't overly game changing.
Don't know, seems fine.
I'd say Mania does give a lot of tweaks to level designs and use of gimmicks that helps level flow smoother, but I agree. 3&K and 2 still hold up fine.
QUICK
SINCE SONIC GOT A NEW MOVE IN MANIA, THINK OF A NEW MOVE FOR KNUCKLES AND TAILS RIGHT NOW
Tails can descend quickly when pressing down
Knuckles can curl when landing from a glide and loose no momentum.
Drop dash allows you to keep speed like crazy
Would be cool to see sunset park from triple trouble.
you mean the guy who screams at Tails to shut up when he's about to drown on his surfboard because Sonic just wants to chill on the beach with his tunes?
>there are people on/v/ who never played classic sonic
It's weird that someone hasn't played them tbqh. They're among the most iconic and it's easy to emulate
They've also been re-released on virtually every console since the Saturn.
