Eating as much as you want doesn't mean you're consuming more calories than just enough to maintain your weight.
I was pretty underweight at one point even though I was drinking chocolate milk every day, having desserts, and eating whatever I wanted. I wasn't exercising much though and my meals were pretty small. Once I started exercising I started eating a lot more and gained a fair bit of weight and muscle, and I realized I wasn't eating nearly as much as I thought I was.
