If it's illogical then it tends to suck balls though, particularly if the player is expected to use some kind of consistent logic in order to progress
Anyway, the main problem with invisible or hard to see traps is that they tend to slow gameplay down to a crawl. They're fine when they're used sparingly and in clearly defined areas, like the minefields in Half-Life, especially if they can be neutralized in some intuitive way like tossing grenades into their vicinity.

Doesn't that rely entirely on the game's overall genre? Shit obviously would kill the mood in something like Devil May Cry, even the dice game in DMC4 was enough to make me go limp, but in something like Maximo I think it would be fine, especially when used sparingly like you said.
