Untrue, we shat all over this terrible "game" and how much damage it did to the series story. Nice attempt at revisionist history. Easily the worst game in the series.

4>1>3>2 is the patricians choice

Wrong
It's a really bad game and we all said as much

KYS

Sup Forums has changed

It did. MGS 4 hate was overwhelming, now you have people pretending it's a good game after MGS V came out. Classic Zelda cycle.

Yeah next you'll tell me old Sup Forums loved the PS3 and all those "NO GAMES" memes were fake news all along.

No
I remember being in 500+ post MGS 4 threads mocking all the awful shit about this game and getting that one butthurt fanboy going "U GUYS ARE JUST MAD IT'S A PS4 EXCLUSIVE ;_;"

PS3 exclusive* fuck

Fuck you, I liked it: The Game.

>mgs2
>last on any patrician list

you must be thinking of another word starting with p

Sup Forums
>"It's fucking awful REEEE"

>play it
>find it pretty decent despite "loud levels"
>enjoy the cutscenes
>final boss fight most kino moment in the franchise

The only weird shit was Raiden but I enjoyed how the game made me feel about Snake, seeing him slowly die over the course of a game was a strange feel, but felt pretty original

PC version WHEN!?

That describes MGSV perfectly.

More games should do the "protag is past their prime" premise

Seeing that dynamic camo was the most genuine feeling I had of "next gen" gaming since maybe Mario 64.

I thought that the trend in innovation and tech enhancements would continue, but instead we got muh netflix and facebook.

I never got the hate for the game, it just feels like people jumping on the bandwagon. The high points in the game make up for what few low points I experienced.
I do think the game should've ended with snake shooting himself and rolled the credits the second you hear the gunshot.

It was pretty garbage by MGS standards. But then MGSV game along and set a new low.

The story is a complete trainwreck riddled with holes that farts watery diarrhea all over everything that came before it, kind of like what Johnny does every time he's on screen, which may have led to him being a cryptic metaphor for the game.

The gameplay is great for the four hours of it you get to enjoy.

Last gen was pretty prime with old man protags. Old Snake in MGS4, Old Ezio in AC: Revelations, Joel in TLOU.

>it just feels like people jumping on the bandwagon
Because that's exactly what it is. This happens with other games as well.

i love MGS4.

>tfw is the only game in the series to actively make me mad at how bad it was

I barely finished it. What a fucking shit show.
The final fist fight and ending were the only good part.

Its funny how every complaint about MGS4 can easily be said about MGSV too. Why do people still think Kojima is a great story teller?

I enjoyed it a lot. I wouldn't say it was the weakest, more in the middle ground. Really, I'd say V and Peace Walker are the weakest of the mainline games but I still consider them good games.

>Its funny how every complaint about MGS4 can easily be said about MGSV too.
Yes, and?
>Why do people still think Kojima is a great story teller?
Because they haven't seen enough decent movies and/or books yet. I use to be the same and thought the entire Metal Gear series was really deep and well written, looking back on it today it's incredibly preachy yet never had anything new to say nor provided a unique point of view. Not to mention the overarching story was inconsistent, contradictory and riddled with holes and failed to develop any of its characters in any meaningful way. And then there's the fact that many of its so-called "brilliant" ideas were ripped straight from various other sources.

MGS never had a good story, the gameplay always made it work, and even then you could still find better alternatives on the market even back then.

I liked it. The only part that bothered me were the Naomi/Otacon and Meryl/Johnny moments.

The Naomi/Otacon moments were the best part of the game though.

>Naomi: I literally cured cancer but am randomly going to kill myself just because lol
>Otacon: ABLOOBLOOBLOO NAOOMI

Only the first two acts are good the rest is shameless fanservice. Also when you go back to shadow moses island it's really fucking gay. There's also multiple literal hour long exposition dumps. Octocamo and stress was a good idea though, but they should have made it not recover when enemies are nearby

3 > 1 > 2 > 4 > V > PW.

Is Portable Ops decent?

MGS 4 is trash

Nah

This is garbage taste from someone whose first game was MGS3.

So good

So many payoffs and nostalgia moments

So many incredible bosses

Easter eggs, secrets, MGO until it became flodded with hackers

Even with all the cutscenes, it's still glorious and it shits all over V

>V > PW.
I know you're misleading on purpose, but could you think of anything better than this?

>even then you could still find better alternatives on the market even back then.

As someone who really liked the unique intersection of story and gameplay the first three mgs games presented, what are some of those better alternatives I should look into? Looking for new shit to play

MSGV and MSG4 are both great

I really liked it even before V was out

...so?

I love all MG games equally.

Try the Thief games and Deus Ex. If you're looking for pure stealth then try Splinter Cell. If you're looking for hours of cutscenes full of preachy melodrama and convoluted tweests then try any post-SNES Square game.

The game was literally made to be as horrible as possible and completely destroy the series and everything that came before it, and people still defend it. Kojima was laughing in your face when Meryl married the diarrhea man.

Huh, it's almost as if Kojima was done with the series after Snake Eater, and he was being forced to make an unnecessary finale.

I like this game. But then again i also like twin snakes so I'm sure I'm a vast minority.

Actually it's almost spot on. Just flip 1 and 3

Fuck that, Sup Forums shit on it hard.

peace walker is absolute garbage. at least V is fun to play.

PW has a retarded story and the gameplay is atrocious.

i liked this game

>It's another 'Charlie posts on Sup Forums' episode
Sage.

there was 4 defenders too. They were usually retarded and basically shut their ears off at any actual critisisms on the game. Even denying the fact there's literally more cutscenes than game or saying that's a positive.

I cant even say the game is great. Act 3 is pure unadulterated shite from a gameplay perspective. The whole act is a fucking escort mission, then that fucking clusterfuck of a bike sequence, then some bitch pretending she's a shittier Rathalos fight.

I have always thought it was a good game despite its massive flaws, and now that every MGS after has been worse I love it even more

Not that user but honestly, I can't agree. Venom's presence doesn't REALLY change much, it just fills a very minor plothole with an overly convoluted explanation (like Rogue One did with the Death Star's weakness.)

MGS4 actively revises much of the history of the series and recontextualizes almost every interesting and supernatural thing that's happened since MGS1 as nanomachines.

It really kind of pissed me off. I actually really enjoy the game and the WAY much of the story was told. At the end, after the Ocelot fight, I was emotionally drained because it was so cathartic but, thinking back, it's all spoiled by the shitty retcons that were completely unnecessary within the context of the story they were trying to tell.

boards.fireden.net/v/search/filename/Gaming Brit Show/
>It's another me stalking this guy on Sup Forums who likes to accuse people of being TGBS for defending MGS4
You changed the filename though, pretty sure you've done this like 10+ times now

>Unnecessary

A game following MGS2 was absolutely necessary but I don't think MGS4 was it. MGS2 should have been the end of Snake's story, passing the torch on to Raiden in a sense. MGS4 should have followed Raiden trying to retrieve Sunny rather than the massive time skip we got. Snake would make cameos but it wouldn't be his story.

MGS4 was a lot better when I first played it.

Replaying it recently I definitely see the flaws but there is a good amount I do enjoy about the game. Ocelot for one (as always) put on a fantastic performance, and I do think the final scene was very good. Especially looking back now, big boss came to terms with everything and accepted what the bosses actual will was.

V expanded upon that greatly as you see big boss, skull face, and zero trying to carry out what they think is the boss's will.

>*for defending MGS4 episode

Sure. What's the argument here? If you hate MGS4 you love MGSV?

Right after the Legacy Collection comes to Steam.

Never played a Metal Gear game. Give me the basic gestalt on what each one brings to the table (not gonna play handhelds, btw).

1-4 great all brilliant
PW was alright, you can emulate it or get it on PS3
V fuckin sux but if you really really like open world games you might like the gameplay

How did rogue one use a convoluted explanation? It can be boiled down to

>they stole death star blueprints to discover a weakness and died in the process

How is that overly convoluted?

>MGS4 actively revises much of the history of the series and recontextualizes almost every interesting and supernatural thing that's happened since MGS1 as nanomachines.

You could say the same of MGS2

"There's no such thing as luck or the supernatural, only cutting edge technology

-Revolver Ocelot

no we fucking didn't, everyone turned it into a meme that it was a movie.

1-3 are great games
4 is dogshit unless you want a 10 hour movie that ruins the rest of the series
and 5 is shit with repetitive missions and empty world but good game mechanics

Was it kino?

MGS4 gat sum really good gameplay though but some acts are really boring on repeat playthroughs
Can you give it that

>because there's memes people don't like it

That is a long running mgs joke that the fans say all the time. It's funny, doesn't mean we don't love it.

The game suffered from some stuff. Namely having to explain EVERYTHING and using terrible explanations (Vamp being nanomachines was stupid in a world that already had supernatural elements).

That said it was fun, had some great moments, and ending was a good (if goofy) twist.

I'm actually really hoping for a MGS4 remaster at some point. Or at least a fucking PC version so I can play at more than 1024x768 or whatever the PS3 cranked it out at.

I suppose I used the wrong term; it's not convoluted from a plot perspective, it's just this big, bombastic, expensive movie that really comes down to explaining why the Death Star had a stupid critical flaw.

Also, Ocelot said that quote and was immediately refuted by Fortune deflecting the bullets anyway. MGS1, 2 and 3 firmly established supernatural forces in the world and MGS4 took most of the supernatural plot points they reasonably could and explained them away with nanomachines.

The most jarring are ones they didn't really need to explain, like Vamp. MGS2 set up a pattern that indicated that Vamp was revived by water. Just...kill him away from water and burn the corpse or something.

A little

>r-retcons!
Hardly. There were some minor ones but it was more like Hideo steered his own Ip in a way that disagreed with some people's head canon.

No but MGS4 is literally a movie, there is almost no substantial gameplay past Act 2.

They weren't explicitly retcons but having every supernatural element important to the story come down to nanomachines seemed to fly in the face of a world which had heavily established itself as supporting supernatural things.

I'd just be happy with a port, MGS4 looks really good already. I'd feel bad for the guy working on MGO2R but it would be awesome if they got MGO2 back up officially in new versions.

I like how ypu guys always have an MGS thread up, pop in for a few laughs, get some nice info and opinions

act 1 and 2 are good, yeah

>Also, Ocelot said that quote and was immediately refuted by Fortune deflecting the bullets anyway

True. But I still don't think nanomachines are too big a problem. You're talking about a world that is controlled to an extreme extent by large forces through means of highly advanced technology. I think there's room for both of these things in the universe, and come on do you just want vampires being natural in the universe? It makes sense, mgs2 never explicitly said vamp wasn't under the influence of nanomachines. And they were always there since the first game.

>"There's no such thing as luck or the supernatural, only cutting edge technology
>-Revolver Ocelot
A few seconds later, he gets proven wrong, you dumbass.

Good job showing how new you are

4 is trash and you're trash too

>falling for patriot ruses

When will you sheeple learn?

This.
Seriously why have I seen so many 4 apologists on this board within the last month? I can't think of a single game that did more collective damage to the in game universe than MGS4 and yet here people are saying 'it wasn't that bad' or 'no one cared about that stuff anyways'.

The thing is MGS4 didn't really counter anything in the previous games, there aren't really any clear contradictions. It's just that there is a fair amount of ambiguous points in mgs. All MGS4 did was expand and build upon things, if you didn't like that then fine. But don't act like MGS4 actively went against all canon facts and just turned MGS into something it wasn't, because that is just not right.

what damage did 4 do to the story

There are a bunch of nonsensical or straight out unnecessary contrivances in MGS4's plot that exist only so that this game can exist.
>Codec team from MGS3 are the Illuminati
>EVA was the surrogate mother for Les Enfants Terribles
>Raiden was used as an experimental dummy for the Patriots despite the Patriots having technology for cyborgs as shown in 2
>Dr. Madnar who gets blown up on screen in MG2 is now alive and well
>Big Boss who was incinerated in MG2 was reconstructed from Liquid and Solidus
These are just all unnecessary and these are just off the top of my head, like I said these only exist so that a game after MGS2 can exist when there's no reason for it to exist.

boards.fireden.net/v/search/text/Codec team from MGS3 are the illuminati/
holy fuckkk whole story completely ruined immersion broken

>Dr. Madnar
im sure that was a different one, the wiki doesnt say hes in 4

Could be, I don't think it's ever expanded upon in one way or another and it is pretty minor. The rest are still valid.

I think Biggie being burned in MG2 isn't cannon
ign.com/boards/threads/so-big-boss-was-burned.96553262/
12th post?

>Codec team from MGS3 are the Illuminati

They're just original founders of an organization that spun out of control, all from zeros will. So what.

>EVA was the surrogate mother for Les Enfants Terribles

Someone had to be.

>Raiden was used as an experimental dummy for the Patriots despite the Patriots having technology for cyborgs as shown in 2

And? Technology can't progress? New things can't be tried? Call him grey fox 2.0 if you want but this isn't an issue.

>Dr. Madnar who gets blown up on screen in MG2 is now alive and well

Where? I don't remember this.

>Big Boss who was incinerated in MG2 was reconstructed from Liquid and Solidus

I forgot what exactly happened but even if it isn't that far fetched for this series. Again you don't have to like it but don't act like this contradicts anything.

This. Anyone who was around for even a few years after release will be able to tell you Sup Forums shat all over the game.

I agree, there's room for both.

So why was almost every plot point in MGS4 explained away with nanomachines?

They established Ocelot's link to the supernatural through The Sorrow. Why not let that plot ride out to its natural conclusion by letting him actually be possessed by Liquid? If not that, why not let Vamp actually be something that defies death (it doesn't have to be an actual vampire since the game makes it clear that he chooses to drink blood, he doesn't need it)?

MGS4, for some reason, seemed set in a world where anything that appeared to be supernatural was just smoke and mirrors -- the literal interpretation of your quote -- when the other games clearly had room for both.

You understand that the Patriots and the surrogate mother for Les Enfants Terribles all being the side characters from MGS3 is a ridiculously huge contrivance, right?

It just feels....lazy.

someone remind me why naomi had nanomachines

I watched the entire thing and I dont remember them ever explaining it, just cutscenes of her using needles to surpress it and telling snake NO TIME TO EXPLAIN

We would be good friends.

thats not how it ended though. Did you not finish the credits?

lmao if you thought that was the end.

Those are some pretty weak recommendations; you must not play many games. Deus Ex is the only one you mentioned that actually had a story that wouldn't have been told more effectively through a different medium.

she had cancer
