other than monsters, if you leave the gas unkillable red gasses home in on you. you can barely outrun them but when ur stamina is done so are you.
if you've got a weapon better than planks and nails it's pretty ok to go outside the hideout in hideout 1 if you're confident.

uh, repair it, then click on it, and you'll heal slowly
the gas surrounds the house in an aura, even outside, a pretty fair amount. and going outside the barrier doesn't mean instant death and damage, it takes a second or two for the gas to spawn.
the safety aura is pretty apparent at night, you should be able to see.
Press Q and choose the ability that you want to use

Made it to hideout 3. Forgot the [spoiler/]bell, so I don't have my gear yet[endspoiler/] Chompers almost always kill me unless I have a shotgun. Yet to explore the rest of the old woods.
I wished I knew about this biker dude earlier, it was a pain in the ass to move my stuff to the other hideout all by myself.

Im at 1st hideout, started a second playthrough since i know what to do now. gonna not harvest shrooms till 2nd hideout so i don't have the shitty darkness negative perk, spend my affinity with merchants better, and save all the tractor parts which i lost because they had a value of 0

last time i played i had to completely fill a small room with desks, chairs, anything i could find and find a way to wedge my self in a corner so the 5 chompers (that always knew right where i was) wouldn't rape my asshole in the night.

It's nowhere near that bad anymore. Chompers also don't naturally know where you are. They hunt from room to room.

they only cut off light within an area, if you bundle 3 lamps into a room, they will get you, if you have lights spread out evenly across the house, you're gucci.

Is your hidey-hole behind the wardrobe next to a window or crack? Cause they can see you through that shit. If you can see them, they can see you and even if you can't see them, they can probably see you.
Also, the Developers plan to enact a punishment mechanic for people who hide behind big stuff repeatedly each night.
It's probably for balancing then, since you could just drag a wardrobe into a corner every night and avoid any confrontation.

I'm wondering if it's even worth trying to level up. Do the higher tiers offer better upgrades because getting to see your location on the map once a day or healing from touching a lamp are kind of shitty even without the rape ghosts.

A lot of times I tried that I got fucked over by poison gas seeping into the room where I was hiding. Another time, bugs spawned in my room and since I didn't killed them they spawned worms around my workbench. I had all my molotovs in my workbench too, it sucked.

nah they cut off every light except for exactly one, at least in normal and I think hard, dunno about nightmare.
Thats why the old woods hideout is infinitely shit since there are so many non-movable lightsources including several on the outside so you are very likely to die if they cut off a particularly bad one.

there are already two punishments that I know of:
1. an aoe red gore that spawns on top of you and grows to a large size, forcing you to move
2. a poltergeist moves all your shit to the middle of the room and opens your doors
that's why you carry extra light sources
Even so, neither of those are guaranteed to spawn. They have something else planned.
