How does the gamecube version fare compare to the Dreamcast version?
shitty
Please explain.
>Waking up on a Saturday morning, watching cartoons, then booting up the Dreamcast
>Hearing the smooth, dreamy boot-up sound as the dot turns into the Dreamcast logo
>Then this slowly fades in

Am I just clouded by nostalgia or was the Dreamcast not a fucking amazing console full of fun niche titles that wouldn't see the light of day nowadays, adventurous experimental titles, and various exclusive imports?
Like I had everything from a TurboGrafX16 to a PS2 growing up, but the Dreamcast felt special, like it had more of a "soul" to it than other consoles.
>you will never be able to gank your telephone line to plug it into the back of your gaming console so you can game with your buddies and people around the world
bruh, I just teared up too. Literal goosebumps
It really was an amazing thing on consoles for the time. Like my best friend on PSO was a RaCast from Puerto Rico. Was a cool dude.
Fine, apart from having to suffer using a shit controller. But if you want more content you should be playing Blue Burst on the PC which you can still play online. Dreamcast for senseless nostalgia or BB for the complete game. The GC version has no purpose anymore.
I fucking love PSO. It's a shame that PSO2 is such a damn weeb/waifu festival. I played my fair share of it and it's just not the same....
Fucking shit I miss pso so much. I wish the private servers weren't so sparsely populated.
the only thing I heard during 2001 Christmas were parents fighting
>that scratching sound
>playing Shenmue
>that damn sound every time loading
It's painful these days. I can't play the Dreamcast at night because of all that noise
>Am I just clouded by nostalgia or was the Dreamcast not a fucking amazing console full of fun niche titles that wouldn't see the light of day nowadays, adventurous experimental titles, and various exclusive imports?
Some games would be indie but with much less quality.
Something ambitious as Shenmue would never happen. Much less with that amount of detail and hidden secrets.
Arcade games are dead so, arcade should would never happen.
So yeah, Dreamcast was special, because it was a mix of many things.
Just stopping by to remind you of the MMO you played after PSO and took your entire teen years from you.
Don't mind me at all.
Thanks for the info.
Im way okay with it
kill me
SEA couldn't die fast enough to maintain the game's identity before Ep4. Localizing back at Ep2 wouldve really helped them keep it.
GC version still has 4 player split screen co-op/vs. So it's cool if you're into local multiplayer, but that's about it.
I guess if your mates are too poor or lazy to bring around their PCs for a LAN, otherwise setting up your own BB server, which is a 3 minute ordeal, or just playing on an existing internet one is still the way to go. Putting up with splitscreen seems like unneccesary suffering to me.
I don't know much about this game but here's a bump.
>Tried out one of the private servers last year
>Worked fine even though they added their own personal bullshit
>Find out the installer had a trojan on it months later
All Sega needs to do is throw a legal version of the game up on Steam. Don't even have to HD up the graphics, just proper monitor/controller support and stable servers. Put it on Steam for $15-20 and I'll be there day 1.
>they added their own personal bullshit
This is how I know you're talking about Shithack. Should have asked around m8, we would have steered you away from it. You shouldn't let that be the experience that shapes your opinion on private servers.
ephinea.pioneer2.net is real PSO.
Is Shithack the same as the Ultima server? Because that's the one I was one.
>tfw Phantasy Star V never
>Ultima
My condolences.
I cannot find a copy of this game for GC anymore to save my life. Is it rare or something?
Also, I have the DC version though. That thing doesn't go online anymore, right?
Find a flaw.
Oh, I guessed the particular brand of shit you were forced to consume wrong. I guess that sort of does hurt my point when the amount of shit servers outnumber good ones, so allow me to make a new point: they're not ALL bad.
> That thing doesn't go online anymore, right?
There are DC version 2 servers in existence, you can't use your original disc obviously but you can burn a disc that can connect to said servers and play PSO with the one other ultra nostalgiafag who hates PSOBB!
pure comfy nostalgia. that ost hits me right in the feels
>a whole new wooooorrrrld
localization of content took too long causing the game to die on xbox for me and my friends
Well im just kinda dumb, why wouldnt i be able to use my OG disc?
Didnt they pay money to go online on top of the live subscription?
This is Sup Forums user
'Cause the official servers are dead as a doornail m8. You'd need to use a modified version of the game that connects to a living server. Remember, Dreamcast plays backups out of the box so this is not a big deal.
Is burning dreamcast discs as easy as it seems?
be honest
did you ever find anything good?
i found a sealed j-sword once with a friend
I found... like 5 friends who I still talk to, and 2 of who I still game with. (From GCN days)
That's alright. I get goose bumps and have to stop and reminisce every time I think about PSO a little in-depth. It's kind of funny how now that you grow older and jaded, things mean so less more than they did back then - hell, I was hype for the few chances I got to sit down and play through every single area of Ep 1 or 2 on Xbox.
But it's okay because those things will live on forever. Ephinea is doing pretty strongly right now, and you aren't the only one to get goosebumps when you remember any cutscene, area, item drop, music, or long night spent chilling in the lobby with people that were nowhere in your local area, but that shared the same (ultimately) meaningless passion as you.
It's those good times and the promise of a return, no matter how brief, to simpler times and a connection through then. Sort of like a time portal, for any lack of a more eloquent or accurate phrase. I know I just played PSO last year and got a whole gang together to slough through the content, but just couldn't remain interested. Those things are still going to be there whenever I'm ready, bored, comfortable and in a position to go back and enjoy those things just as much as I did back then.
>tfw Amazon still has brand new copies of Ep.III for sale
I bought one a couple of years ago and I can't tell you how happy I was to see a brand new, factory sealed Gamecube game after so long. I had played a ton of PSO on Dreamcast and Xbox but never the card game spin-off. It's pretty neat, although I only played the hero side.
"It's okay, I'm fine with a clone. Really..."
Was pretty cool though that music track returned in PSO2 remixed.
Holy shit, are you me?
Yeah, pretty simple. In order to burn the CDI images you may need a plugin for a certain burning program (I think ImgBurn? It's been a while). Just Google Dreamcast burning if it's something you're interested in doing.
Been a while since ive even heard of CD burns. Kind of wanna try the CARD one to, thanks user.
Recommend me some good DC games, anons. I wasn't cognizant enough for video games by the time it came out, so I'm clueless, but I recently bought one because it looked fun as hell design-wise and the VMUs intrigued the shit out of me. I have PSO and SA1 so far.
i spent hours with help from other sites on just trying to make an account on the fucking website, even days spent, then just gave up cause it looked like weeb crap anyways
The game it self warns you about this m8.
>played PSO forever when it came out on a shitty 56k
>can even remember playing it more than my PS2 well into 2003 right before seganet shutdown in NA
>get nostalgic every now and then and see if it's possible to still play online
>look up costs on a DC broadband adapter
>$150-$200
With all the craze retro gaming has these days I'm surprised a third party hasn't made a cheap copy of the DC broadband adapter
>Powerstone 1 and 2
>Space Channel 5
>Shenmue
Those are the main ones I remember and played aside from PSO and the sonic games.
Skies of Arcadia
Grandia 2
Shenmue
Bomberman Online
Bangai-O
ChuChu Rocket
Ecco the Dolphin
Giga Wing
Mars Matrix
Hope you got a few blank cdrs lying around. The games everyone will recommend to you are going to be expensive as fuck.
Isn't the GC version of Skies of Arcadia a strict upgrade?
Sound quality dropped to fit it on the GC disc but honestly I never noticed it.
I still get nostaligia from hearing the Dreamcast grind away as it reads a disc.
Reminds me of when I played Metropolis Street Racer all night when I was 4 years old. You could probably say that one moment is what got me here today.
Tech Romancer
I wouldn't burn discs like this user suggests since it'll kill your Dreamcast over time. It took mine 16 years though.
If you're okay with taking the risk, check the underside of the console to see if it's a Model 0/1, if it is then you'll be able to play games fine. Otherwise, try and look up SD card readers for the Dreamcast.
Also to add onto recommendations.

Don't those use the serial port and are slow as shit?
Do you have any evidence that SD card readers don't affect performance? I'd like to check one out if they can still run games at regular speeds.

Improved Graphics (pic related)
I don't have one myself, but videos I find online show that people can run games off the thing perfectly fine. Including stuff like Shenmue 2's Emulator only English Patch. Apparently the speeds for the loading are around 20-30 seconds, which would be similar to starting up an actual Dreamcast with a game inside.
