>Cave Story doesn't even make top 100 lists anymore
F*ck this g*y Earth
What the fuck is Pixel doing now?
When is his next game?
I've played through Cave Story and Kero Blaster so many fucking times
He's modest to a fault
Meme Story
It's not a meme... it's just... It's not a meme.
daily reminder that Jack and Santa are best mimgas
Is this a good game? Never heard of it
It's one of the best games ever made. It's freeware too: cavestory.org
Download NXEngine as well if you want to play in fullscreen. It is also available as a core for Retroarch.
kero blaster was shit
>never heard of it
Fuck off faggot
Its a pretty damn solid game.
The kind that doesnt bring much new stuff to the table, but executes all it does so well, you cant find any flaws.
It was made by one single person, over 5 years, from 1999 to 2004, and released for free when every other kind of "indie game" back then was flash stuff on newgrounds.
Actually, it is often praised as the best indie game ever made and the inspiration to the entire chunk of the industry
wrong
It was alright for what it was. I was satisfied with it, but it could've been better.
. is a shit game
Other than kero blaster what other games has he done?
Cave Story is a good game
It didn't do anything objectively wrong. If you didn't like it, thats just you. You need to stop acting like a child.
>I didn't like it, this game is shit!
>I didn't like it, this game doesn't suit my tastes in what I look for in a game!
Two different things.
everything pixel ever made was a steaming pile of turds
what a sad miserable life
but kero blaster really was fucking shit
quit being a contrarian user
What was bad about it
You're the only contrarian here you fucking faggot
Just finished hard mode recently, one of my all time favorite games.
I love games where the main/original weapon is a fast press/mashing type, like Metroid and Contra. Any more?
>it is now considered cool to hate Cave Story and Kero Blaster
kill me
It's a very relaxing game to play. Hard mode was a little challenging, but the simple graphics and music made the experience very relaxing.
my ass
shitposting on Sup Forums is never cool
Cave story is my favorite fucking game of all time. i dont call stuff neo-Sup Forums often, but it's a real shame watching cave story threads die over the years. I don't hate newfags, but I am really upset that most of them have never, and probably will never play this absolute gem of a game.
It's a really fucking special game to me. I met my girlfriend through it and I'm going to propose soon. It's really fucking dorky and stupid, but I want to put quote and curly on our wedding cake. It's subtle enough to be cute I think, and not overly cringey and stupid.
What the fuck
I'm glad for you user, but how the fuck did you meet your future spouse from Cave Story?
Will you make an Iron Bond as well? I restore Curly's memory in literally every playthrough, not just for the Hell run, but just because that reunion scene is so nice.
will you steal her panties
Not exactly all games, but he's done a ton of shit

>Downloaded Cave Story in 2010
>Never got round to finishing it
whoa is this the undertale thread haha ecks dee
this is the reality of the world we live in now
I hold Cave Story very fondly in my memories and i think it's my absolute favorite game ever
But I have never been able to beat the final boss rush before Hell
It's just fucking impossible for me
Fuck
Met her in school, bonded over cave story.
The wedding cake stuff is far enough, I think
Already done.
You mean Misery, Doc, Doc again and the Core? It was pretty hard for me the first time but I got it after like 20 or 30 minutes.
>quote and curly on the cake
That's not subtle at all. Either way you better post pics eventually.
After beating Doc, you can get some hearts if you talk to the purple Mimiga twice.
The Core is easy as long as you take down Misery first, Sue isn't really a big threat.
Cave Story is in my top 3 and I think Undertale is a great game. Forced memers be damned.
Overrated and flawed as fuck.
The good stuff is really good though.
Flawed how?
I feel like a cowboy when I stand in a boss' line of fire, and finish him off with quick mashing of the Polar Star before he gets his attack off.
youtube.com
What other games have these basic button mashing weapons with horizontal/vertical aiming?
Fetch quests, backtracking, unskippable cutscenes.
Many parts of the game completely fall apart on replay.
Another World doesn't have vertical aiming but it has that quick-draw-or-die feel and lots of frantic mashing. Very cowboy even if it's sci-fi. Like Cave Story it was also made by one man and was incredibly influential, definitely moreso than Cave Story. Time seems to be forgetting both though.
>unskippable cutscenes
nigga you just gotta smash the button
I guess I'm the dumbest game player alive, but I thought the ride off the island thing was the ending until I saw a Sup Forums thread about cave story.
is Curly spry?
The dog fetching isn't TOO bad since it has you advancing further and further into the map for each dog, but I will agree that the Plantation fetch quests were just killing time especially because you have one of the boosters at that point, so there aren't any big obstructions.
But the entire underground prison and last cave segments were really good.
Is the Switch version worth it?
If you've never played Cave Story, then yeah, definitely get it, I heard the visuals and screen resolution is slightly improved from the PC version.
If you've already played the game, don't bother.
>smash the button
Painfully unfun when it's about skipping cutscenes. Which is just another reason why unskippable cutscenes are a goddamn sin.
>The dog fetching isn't TOO bad
You have to be joking, this thing is literally fetchquest+backtracking unholy package of fun murdering. Going back and forth that section is pure ass. Pixel went full retard on that part.
>the entire underground prison and last cave segments were really good
Exactly, the game needed more of this to deserve its reputation, instead people wank mindlessly to these stupid ass fetchquests.
Look, cave story is good and all, but everyone knows the best studio pixel game is glasses
>Already done.
You rascal, you.
Does Noill still make porn of her?
you are the kind of people that make this board a shit-flinging contest. brings nothing to the discussion.
The Undertale of freeware indie games.
it's the citizen kane of the dark souls of the overwatch of visual novels
>people wank mindlessly to these stupid ass fetchquests.
They do...? I will admit the fetch quests could've been better thought out, but I don't recall people wanking over it. They usually talk about Hell.
The main problem is that Pixel made doors and obstacles cleared only by progressing the story (ie. defeating a boss, talking to someone) and all of the weapons were pretty much optional. If he made another game in this style, it could apply elements of Metroid, so that the weapons and tools are what open up the obstacles and doors, this will also justify backtracking and exploration.
But other than that, it was a valiant effort for a one man job.
Pixel should have made it like a Treasure action game.
Just finished this game recently and had a really good time. Lovely characters and story, cute style and a final boss that felt truly satisfying to overcome. Might give it a shot in hard mode sometime soon.
>An aged up Yotsuba image that isn't terrible and is actually really nice
Am I dreaming?
Actually, now that I think about, the First Cave was VERY Metroid, how the bricks on the right would obstruct your path in the beginning, but once you get the Polar Star, you can destroy it and move on. The game should've had more of that, just on a more advanced and difficult scale. For example, the Bush Lands could've had trees or spiky vines that could've been burned with the Fireball.
I feel like I enjoyed Kero Blaster better because it felt more focused and straight foward.
I love Cave Story. It's my favourite game, but I usually don't participate in these threads as there is nothing new to talk about until Pixel creates something new.
I feel like I've talked about every single pixel.
>Might give it a shot in hard mode sometime soon
And you'll find out the joy of unskippable cutscenes then.
Hard mode is the same game without any of the health upgrade capsules. It's not really worth playing
>An aged up Yotsuba image that isn't terrible and is actually really nice. Am I dreaming?
Yotsuba fan art, including grown-up Yotsuba, is great as long as people remember the manga for what is really was, a mild everyday life comedy manga.
No... it can't be... is this...
M8 I already played through the game twice to get the true ending. The cutscenes were barley even a minor annoyance.
Precisely.
Hard mode removes all the health upgrades and the Missile launcher. It is actually surprisingly fun. I suggest keeping the Blade leveled up for Ballos.
We could talk about how much we dislike Nicalis
Just an ordinary picture of a marine biologist and a foreigner girl.
We'll see when you keep getting one shot by bosses and you end up having to go through the same cutscenes again and again and again.
Why can't I beat the final boss rush in normal? I've been literally stuck here for weeks. Any tips?
The updated graphics look like shit and they made it even worse on 3DS.
It is indeed a very different genre to Cave Story. The latter being more of a Metroidvania, while Kero is closer to Contra and Metal Slug.
You mean the final boss or the optional final boss?
It's not like a Metroidvania at all... the level of linearity is closer to a JRPG.
True. I still dont think people give Kero enough credit. I like the simplicity of it.
That sounds tough as hell but I think I might give it a shot. I don't like my chances of beating Ballos with just three hearts though.
If it had great art, it would be as worshiped as it deserves to be. Imagine Kero Blaster with Owlboy level graphics. It would win GOTY awards. He really is modest to a fault: if he just secured some funding and hired artists, he would make incredibly well selling stuff.
>the level of linearity is closer to a JRPG
I know the definition of Metroidvania is vague and all, but lets not lose our minds here. And also, not all JRPGs are linear.
>level 3 blade
>cannot fire rapidly
>actually does less dps than level 2 fired repeatedly
Cave Story only kept the worst parts of the metroidvania style though.
that's a thicc curly
Git gud and deal with the bullshit rng that is the falling rocks room
No, think about it. Typical JRPG fare you progress in the direction the game tells you. Paths unlock because of ~narrative reasons~. You have the option of backtracking through areas to reap small rewards if you want.
A Metroidvania though, that's very specific. Those are about gaining new tools that enable you to advance through old areas toward new ones with new tools. Backtracking is the name of the game. Cave Story really isn't fundamentally about backtracking so calling it a Metroidvania is misleading to new players. Frequently I see people complain along the lines of, "It was good, I guess, but it's not much of a Metroidvania," as if that's somehow a complaint, all because people don't know beans about genres and mislabel things.
>not Antares
Is the Switch version any good? I've heard that the Necalis published versions all had problems versus the original, like being slower and stuff with framerate issues and whatnot.
doesn't he have a day job? with that and the royalty he's likely getting from KB & CS, the man's (?) in no hurry to chug out another game anytime soon unfortunately
Ideally, you'd fire level 3 blade to bypass the floating eyes, and you turn around and mash with Curly while the blade animation is going. This is known to be the fastest way to kill Ballos, you can kill him before he even changes directions on the platforms.
>you have one of the boosters at that point
not if you're going for the good ending or the best gun
You don't have any booster at that point. He probably meant the machine gun which you can use to float by firing down, when it's level 3.
Of course the speed issue is still going to be present, they pretend as if that's not an problem. It feels like they're trying to rewrite history. The Switch version also adds in unfitting and sorta ugly fluid physics and a shading system. I think these are both optional, but it just shows Nicalis' philosophy that quality means excess. It's perverted. Not something that should be financially supported. Not that I'd play a Nicalis port even if it was free due to the speed thing.
You get the 0.8 way before the plantation. The Plantation is where you get the Mimiga mask.
also I just now realized "Mimiga" is a reference to "Amiga". duh.
That's a fair point. I guess for me personally, it 'felt' like a Metroidvania, or at the very least, a Metroid-like game, because of the multi-directional shooting, and the presence of limited ammo missile launcher, those were very reminiscent of the days I played NES Metroid. But your point on gaining new tools to advance through old areas is indeed an important, and I daresay, a charming aspect to such games.
If I remember right, by the Plantation, you already have either Booster 0.8 or 2.0, it doesn't matter which ending you went for.
>Of course the speed issue is still going to be present, they pretend as if that's not an problem.
Well. Fuck.
I kind of like the idea of having portable Cave Story but I guess it's not meant to be. In before something like the GPD Win.
So was the "speed issue" literally just increasing the game speed from the original 50 fps to 60 fps ?
NXEngine, an open source clone of the game's engine, has been a Retroarch core for a while now.
>RetroArch has been ported to many platforms. It can run on several PC operating systems (Windows, OS X, GNU/Linux), home consoles (PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360, Wii U, etc), handheld consoles (PlayStation Vita, Nintendo 3DS, etc), on smartphones (Android, iOS, etc), embedded systems (Raspberry Pi, ODROID, etc) and even on web browsers by using the Emscripten compiler.
Yeah. NXEngine lets you toggle between the two from the pause menu.
