I fucking hate the Untolds. Untold 1 is a fucking chore to play and Untold 2 while better also has loads of questionable design choices like maps built around shitty FOE puzzle gimmicks or horribly unfun boss fights.

Stop playing stupid, you know for a fact the level design between 2 and Untold 2 are vastly different.
In that the older games are more focused on corridors and forks in the road and where FOE's occasionally show up to scare you, and the newer ones sacrifice some of the 'labyrinth' aspect to include bigger spaces for FOE-avoiding puzzles? Yeah, that's a little different, but I don't know why it gets some peoples' panties in such a twist.

Consider actually playing the games some more, then.
I have played them and the more organic feel of the dungeons in the older games is far more fun to navigate then trying to avoid some piss-easy FOE puzzle in a big empty room again and again.
So, EO1 Lost Shinjuku is unquestionably better than EOU Lost Shinjuku, right?
We're talking about 2 and Untold 2 here. I dislike Untold 1 but I wouldn't say map design is one of them (even if the frequent shortcuts and floor jump as a mechanic is really dumb)
Fair enough. Still, I can't say I fully understand your viewpoint so that I could even begin to agree with it, the dungeon layout is just abstraction of a supposed location so as long as it provides a sufficient gameplay challenge I don't care that much how the complete map ultimately looks. And in that (gameplay) sense I don't see much of a difference between original and Untold, even if I can recognize the slightly differing design tenets behind them.
