Just beat this game for the FIRST TIME and you know what?

This game fucking owns

>That atmosphere
>That perfect level design

>That pacing

This game is still great, why does Sup Forums hate it so fucking much?

No one here actually hates it, it's just nitpicking and contrarianism.

>Sup Forums hates hl2
Since when?

My man, how was it going in?

My only gripes with HL2 are some of the guns feeling weak and all the exposition near the beginning of the game.

On a replay, the vehicle sections and physics puzzles are not nearly as bad as people make them out to be. I actually like the vehicle sections.

since maybe 5 days ago

Since

>1) it was popular
>2)HL3 is dead, so people are going "I liked those games"

Never underestimate the urge to be contrarian

i remember quite enjoying it actually, but that is all i remember. none of the level design was all that memorable

>This game fucking owns
It's fine that you said this, but for whatever reason this one sentence really reminds me of the internet during the early 2000s

HL2 is fucking awsome though

>That atmosphere
See this is the problem with this fucking game. The atmosphere is ALMOST perfect, but it's ruined by all the retarded, goofy side characters like Kleiner/Barney/let SIMBLY ERIC orthodox Russian sniper man, which makes the bleak, dystopian world it tries to depict fall flat. Everyone should be downtrodden as fuck, about to burst into tears any moment, not shooting quips at you while fighting Eldritch abominations from another world.

Everything should feel as hopeless as Laidlaw's ending for ep. three.

Most people love it. It's a loud vocal minority that fall into a new phenomenon of over scrutinizing classics. Sonic was never good, Zelda is trash, Mario 64 was awful. It gets to the point where you see people saying Megaman was bad.

They're obnoxious, joyless plebs. Ignore them.

who ate all the donuts? Why must we wear these ridiculous ties?

>it's ruined by all the retarded, goofy side characters like Kleiner/Barney/let SIMBLY ERIC orthodox Russian sniper man, which makes the bleak, dystopian world it tries to depict fall flat.
You could have just said "it's ruined by all the people having hope"

PWNED
n00b! *holds up spork*

It's a fantastic game and outshines its predecessor in almost every way.

If it had less bits where you're just standing around listening to people talk, and the "let me give you a tutorial on how this weapon works, also play fetch with this robot" didn't exist, it would be 10/10.

>Half-Life
8.5/10
>Half-Life 2
9.5/10

>it's ruined by all the retarded, goofy side characters like Kleiner/Barney/let SIMBLY ERIC orthodox Russian sniper man
Wow look at this horrible taste. Those characters give the game personality, Half Life 2 wouldn't be Half Life 2 without them.

Half-life 1 was always a pretty ridiculous premise though, so it's nowhere near as out of place as it is in the sequel.

It fucking is though. 20 years of life under a brutal totalitarian regimes controlling the entire planet, aliens from another dimension that defeated the entire planet in seven fucking hours. Even 20 years later everyone should be walking around as though they've just been raped. It doesn't make any sense otherwise.

>Those characters give the game personality,
They didn't though. This is clearly what they were going for, but the characters were so one-dimensional and act in such improbable ways that they might as well not even have bothered.

You're the only one that feels that way, sorry buddy.

>why does Sup Forums hate it so fucking much?
Because they've played better games.
Like Half-Life 1.

sounds like you would've enjoyed the HL2 Beta more.

Absolute horseshit. I've seen loads of posters in this shithole alone who agreed with essentially everything I've typed.

You know this true, and you have no rebuttal.

t. somebody who clearly never played HL1.
Valve games were all about the black comedy since day 1.

Probably.

Half-Life clearly isn't intended to be 100% grimdark and self-serious. It's a game where you're a physicist in a super hazmat suit going around genociding dozens of soldiers and aliens in all sorts of ridiculous situations, all while carrying an infeasible amount of weaponry in your magical pockets.

Go play Metro if you're looking for a grounded FPS in a bleak and dystopian world.

half life 2 is no means a bad game but i strongly disagree with the idea that it is better than the first game in even any way other than graphics

>That perfect level design
lol

>Everyone should be downtrodden as fuck, about to burst into tears any moment, not shooting quips at you while fighting Eldritch abominations from another world.
Literally in the first chapter of the game there are several instances where the people being portrayed as downtrodden. You even have to walk through an apartment building where people are consoling each other and asking one another what they need to do. People outside the city are fighting for the Resistance and probably know that they can't be downtrodden about it because the Resistance would have already failed if they had been.

Keep in mind the story of Half-Life takes place a long time after the first game meaning that people are probably not as shocked by the "Eldritch abominations" as they were when they first appeared. Also Gordon Freeman is hailed as this hero, presumably because the story of his exploits was passed down by survivors of the Black Mesa incident. That's why people are hopeful when Gordon arrives at the scene because they know with his help there's hope for victory.

As for Father Grigori, he is clearly used to being in Ravenholm and fighting off his citizens and his attitude towards it is actually kinda poignant. Sometimes when attacking zombies he'll go "I remember your true face" and there's no way to be sure he actually knows that or if he's just crazy for being in Ravenholm for so long.

Physics, gunplay, pacing. I think they'd be about on par if the end of HL1 didn't completely shit the bed.

Nah. The characters are good. If the game was like how you want it, it would be generic. All of those characters are memorable and add to the game.

This sub hates any game if it happens to be too popular.

I played HL1 before 2.

And anyway that's not my point. My point is that the far more bleak atmosphere in HL2 doesn't fit the 'black comedy' that you're describing.

>physics
gimmicky shit that detracted from fun aspects of half life 2

>gunplay
most guns were fucking peashooters what the fuck

>pacing
okay

>no I'm right
Stunning rebuttal.

The characters sucked dick.

Contrarianism. People think they are somehow superior to others by thinking that this game is bad and saying that multiple times whenever they get the chance.

I agree but "Play with the dog" part was so mind blowing to me the first time I played it.

Half-Life series never takes it self that serious tho. It knows how to make you feel fucking awful and scared by sending you to a place like Ravenholm, but then see a crazy russian man and don't feel so alone for 10 seconds. Sometimes it takes everything from you, captures you, makes you feel hopeless only for then to give the most fun weapon in the entire game and let you rekt everything with it.

The game is fantastic on a first play through, but the simple mechanics and slow paced levels don't hold up for replays. It's also very long for a first person shooter.

> the characters were so one-dimensional and act in such improbable ways that they might as well not even have bothered.

Please give examples that prove your point.

About as good an argument as your "the characters are bad because I said so".

No.

Good thing I didn't make that argument.

>sub

Yeah you did. You can have your opinion, I disagree with it.

>"hey gordon remember me from black mesa??"
>"hey gordon nice crowbar haeh"
>"hey gordon you sure are quiet haha"
can you guess which character i'm quoting? it's fucking all of them.

But I didn't.

>I'll post le funny pic so it seems like I'm not emotionally invested
Good for you faggot.

I think you should stop replying, since you clearly have nothing to contribute.

This

>HEY GORDON YOU GONNA DO THAT THING RIGHT?? BADA BING BADA BOOM. ASHES.

This is exact the kind of shit I'm talking about.

I shouldn't even need to quote this, because it happens literally every time you fucking encounter somebody in the game.

Yeah you did. Sorry bucko. Most people disagree with you and think those characters add to the game.
Literally a meme tier reasoning. Barely any dialogue is like that, but sure go and cherry pick the whole 2 times anything like that is said through the game, it'll help you convince the 3 people who haven't played it that maybe it's bad.

youtube.com/watch?v=6Iu4GXUHfU0

Barney and Alyx only say lines like these once in the entire game. Not a strong enough argument to prove your point, I'm afraid.

>sub
nice

I love this vid

>Most people disagree with you
And a few posts ago you said it was everyone.

Not everyone shares your opinion, and your opinion is not necessarily objectively correct.

Shocking, I know.

>Literally a meme tier reasoning. Barely any dialogue is like that, but sure go and cherry pick the whole 2 times anything like that is said through the game, it'll help you convince the 3 people who haven't played it that maybe it's bad.
You're so fucking stupid, holy shit. 'the whole 2 times?' Did you even PLAY the game? Or are you just this much of a butthurt valve fanboy? Jesus christ.

>Barney and Alyx only say lines like these once in the entire game.
And this is just an outright fucking lie.

Drink bleach.

>tfw you started the hl2 was tech demo meme
im sorry

Yes I have played the game, which is why I know you're grossly exaggerating dialogue and acting like 2 lines are the script of the game.

I thought the parts where you drive around the ruined world were pretty comfy. Didn't care for the boat though but that segment isn't that long.

Some games a just classic. I had a similar experience with playing Deus Ex for the first time last year. I just wish I had it in my life sooner.

The physics added so much to the gameplay. It's not a gimmick, it's a feature that could have easily felt like cheap tech demo shit but actually carries its weight and improves the game immensely. Source is fun as hell.

It's pretty good.

Can you give proof or are you just going to spout the epic bleach meme?

Don't waste your time, dude's socially retarded. He thinks a coworker who hasn't seen you in 20 years wouldn't try to jog your memory and remind you where you know him and that ruins the game because he is ignorant of the way people communicate with each other.

>Half Life has goofy characters

Grass is green and the sky is blue.

I know you're at least around 13 years of age, but go play HL1 before you shitpost

DON'T SHOOT I'M WITH THE SCIENCE TEAM

They aren't really goofy they're just more chipper and optimistic about the future of the rebellion. Goofy is the last word I would use to describe Barney or Kleiner, you're just being a nitpicking faggot about the game just so you can fit in with the other Sup Forumsirgins on this board, however you chose the worst possible reason to criticize Half-Life 2, the characters were one of the best parts about that game.

Sup Forums hates it? I thought we were all on suicidal watch last Friday when Marc Laidlaw practically confirmed that the series is dead.

...

Half-Life 2 is like #3 or something on Sup Forums's greatest games of all time list.

What should I play, Sup Forums?

>Half-Life: Opposing Forces
>Half-Life: Blue Shift

I know that OF > HL, but I don't know where Blue Shift should be.

I don't remember it very much.

Blue shift finishes first and the other two. If you wanna play for timeline reasons, Blue Shift is first.

>why does Sup Forums hate it so fucking much?

Because it ruined FPS by turning it into easy, linear, story focused tech demo crap with lame ass unsatisfying shooting mechanics.

Who is this "Sup Forums" guy that you redditors talk about so much?

I dunno, I found it pretty boring to play through honestly. It's an okay game but nothing spectacular, I vastly prefer HL1 over it.
Maybe the episodes are better, I should get to playing them.

>I agree but "Play with the dog" part was so mind blowing to me the first time I played it.

This. The gravity gun was a big fucking deal at the time as far as innovation in games goes. Having a short section to fuck around with it was fine. it looks silly now, sure, but then it was no issue at all.

How exactly does it improve gameplay? You shoot chairs at enemies? I mean...it's something I guess, but I've never understood peoples fascination with the source engine physics, it just looks silly and usually you're better off just shooting the enemies.
I understand it was a huge technological advancement at the time but everyone gives it so much credit and I can't really understand why.

source?

Well crafted

>Infeasible amount of weaponry
Quitter.

No he isn't. It hits you over the head with it. HL2 is boring trash.

Will you take off your 2017 hat one fucking second, dipshit. and remember that this was 2004. Nothing like it had been seen before. It was a significant step forward in gaming technology.

Are people really complaining about too much weaponry from a 90's/2000's game?

Check the title, babe.
It says "Aoi Honoo Episode 02"

I recently replayed it after not having played it since around the time it came out and it was alright. Knowing how badly Valve butchered the original concept is painful.

I literally called it a huge technological advancement, what more do you fucking want? I'm just saying that other than being impressive it doesn't add much to the game itself, which is pretty bland if you take away the gimmicks.
It's still one of the most influential games ever made and I'm not denying it but it just wasn't that fun for me personally

Original guy wasn't complaining, just stating that the guy saying HL2 isn't good because it isn't grimdark is retarded, since HL2 has all manner of ludicrous over the top aspects like carrying 15 giant scifi guns at once.

>OF > HL
OF is good but come on.

>How exactly does it improve gameplay?

It should have but it doesn't. I've actually made a mod of the game which makes most weapons massively more accurate, for both yourself and for the enemy AI, and that actually completely changes how you approach everything. It makes the game massively better because it forces you to use every available thing you can to cover yourself, meaning you really damn well will want to pick up boxes and metal sheets to place and use as shields whenever you can.

In the regular game there's basically no reason to give a shit about this at all, you can just run from place to place and bullets spray everywhere until you get to the next spot. It's mostly mindless fluff.

>I understand it was a huge technological advancement at the time
Halo came out three years earlier and did most of the same shit.

Maybe there will be a Half life 3 after all? with the episode 3 ending as a intro prologue to the game.

This is the worst post I've ever seen in my life

thanks mate

>played HL2 a few years back
>boring tech demo masquerading as a game
>playing HL1 right now
>having the time of my life playing an actual video game

I'm so glad nobody made the game really GRITTY and EDGY.

Still, i'd love to play Ep3 as Leidlaw written.

me too user...me too. ;_;

That's not goofy, goofy is how it references trivial things from the previous game trying to connect them when really the games have nothing to do with each other.

Well, you've confirmed for me that you were too young to appreciate what Half Life 2 actually did and you must have grown up with games released years after HL2 that were more advanced.

Hopefully some modders do it at least near as good as it would be made by Valve.

Yeah, I played through it for the first time 2 days ago and I agree, what a great game.
