>“Obsidian did a great job of capitalising on the timing of Kickstarter and the wave of nostalgia for these type of titles,” goes his hypothesis. “We've seen that most of the titles after Pillars of Eternity, if you look at Wasteland, Torment - they haven't been anywhere near that kind of success. So maybe it's that a lot of nostalgia fed into the initial bubble and that's why. These games have a market, but it's never gonna be that peak [again].”
>Wester shoulders the responsibility for Tyranny’s marketing, which ran with the slogan: 'Sometimes, evil wins.' It was an approach that wisely brought Tyranny’s twist on RPG morality to the fore - but didn’t touch so much on its singular world and cast.
Wow it's like Obsidiots don't want to admit that Obsidian creates generally unlikable and unsellable games
>B-BUT POE SOLD!
Only because of Baldur's Gate nostalgia
Gavin Morales
I was interested in it because of the premis, but the whole bad guy vs bad guy was a bit of a turn off and apparantly the second half of the game isn't really complete.
James Howard
This is a Kickstarter game everyone who wanted a copy already got one. Who actually expects these kinds of games to sell well? The whole point of Kickstarter is the game gets funded by fans so a game is actually made. Any additional sales from that point on are a bonus.
Aiden Gomez
I didn't buy the game simply because of the games banner/art
It looks like complete shit - like something a Calarts tumblr reject would make
Jacob Johnson
It's a shame because Tyranny is genuiely better than that pile of shit that was Pillars.
Michael Parker
Wow, you're telling me a game with zero marketing in a niche subgenre and previous fanbase to appeal to was a commercial failure? Shocking.
Landon Allen
This. Anyone who honestly expects a crowdfunded game to sell on mass appeal has no idea what crowdfunding is about in the first place.
>Calarts tumblr reject
Not enough noodle limbs and too much depth.
Camden Price
The big boxes for PC games made you proud to own them - with their vague, almost ethereal designs, hiding bigger concepts than you could ever figure out from staring at it.
Angel Evans
Never heard anything about this game. Also Wasteland 2 was kinda shit so it's only natural the "CRPG revival" hype lasted only a short time.
Leo Thompson
>PoE bad >people refuse to buy the next game
It's simple really.
Luis Reed
>still trying to make Baldurs Gate in post-Divinity:OS world People don't want old shit, especially when actual old shit is done better, what a shock
Levi Sanders
Tyranny was some Z-team shit with no marketing and a pretty poor game unlike pillars.
Jeremiah Reyes
*and a pretty poor game exactly like pillars.
Chase Phillips
Tyranny is actually a pretty good game. The problem is that they dis zero marketing for it, so I'm not sure what they were expecting.
Levi Adams
>retard with the same thread every week Did Obsidian fire you?
Jackson Mitchell
spbp
Charles Johnson
I had fun with the game and I'm glad I played it, but I legitimately had no idea what it was about or when it even released, there was just no fucking marketing.
That horrible banner didn't do the game any favors, who the fuck would think that the DA2 tier art would in any way tell people what the game's about.
Blake Collins
Tyranny is not a kickstarter game.
Ian Adams
>Also Wasteland 2 was kinda shit
It's not shit, but the game has 0 replay value due to the way they told the story.
Andrew Thompson
Nah fuck your leatherman
Gabriel Hill
it was boring, content-less and short as fuck
Ryan Brooks
Maybe the should stop making isometric CRPGs, considering the only ones that were good where made by fucking black isle and they're dead.
Dylan Stewart
>Obsidian creates generally unlikable and unsellable games Factually incorrect. They can't make original IPs at all, they just need to work on someone else's lore.
William Phillips
After poe I knew obsidian came to shit. We'll never get another motb, alpha protocol or even new vegas type of games.
Caleb Robinson
The combats pretty boring. Pretty shit in my book. Its basically trying to be new xcom but lacking any of its depth.
Anthony Hill
Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny have the same issue that LawBreakers has. They lack character.
You can't expect people to be interested in your game if it looks so derivative and bland that it could be mistaken for one of those mock-up games you see actors 'playing' on TV shows.
Jordan James
wow it's almost like most people realized how fucking shit and unfun crpgs are
Jason Ross
Pillars was pretty bad, though. They aimed to make Baldur's Gate 2 and made Baldur's Gate 1 instead.
Christian Jones
poe 2 will be good
Austin Clark
>Its basically trying to be new xcom but lacking any of its depth.
WL2's combat is deeper than new xcom, unless suddenly new xcom has time units, finite ammo pools and free aim.
Luke Taylor
The combat in the director's cut felt punchy and nice - the problem, again, is forcing you into combat. Unlike Fallout 1 and 2, which you could run away from.
So many modern shitty WRPGs forget what made that game great.
Michael Smith
Isn't that what they said about poe?
Jonathan Jackson
Tyranny has a LOT of character, unlike PoE.
Adam Sanchez
With the balancing man working on it? I doubt it.
Cooper Evans
Turn based combat is lazy and boring So is that perspective
Bentley Reed
I'd chalk it up to bad marketing. Never heard of this and I'm the type of guy who would be the target audience for this sort of thing
Nolan Ross
kys
Carson Morales
In what way? Pillars system plays nothing like DnD and they definitely have more RPG elements.
Like dunno how every stat was made to be somewhat useful regardless of class like Might being both strength and magic strength or intelligence boosting effects of any ability even non magical.
Jayden Cruz
>Tyranny has a LOT of character
Jeremiah Ramirez
I thought PoE was well above average. 7 out of 10 game easy. My biggest gripe with it were the stupid fucking backer stories or whatever, but I learned pretty fast to just ignore them altogether.
Michael Murphy
>turn based combat even worse, it's RTwP
Eli Barnes
I think the main problem is their artists. All their games look like fucking abominations and horse shit. Every one of their characters look like they just walked out of a tumblr blog and that is a big red flag on potential purchases. I wanted to get all these new WRPG's, I was hyped during the initial wave. Guess how many I bought? Zero. Fucking zero. Because I saw shitty art and tumblr characters. I do not want to be assaulted by fucking identity politics of any kind, and modern writers and journalists are fucking obsessed with the cancer of identity poltiics and these games stories and infused with that cancer.
Find writers who aren't obsessed with identity poltics, and find artists who aren't from fucking tumblr, and you will get more sales. Those two things put all the Obsidian and inExile new WRPG's from must by to steam wishlist get it on sale if it's 80% off tier.
Gabriel Jones
Gotta get those nostalgia bucks from people who hate modern RPGs like Mass Effect and The Witcher.
Jackson Myers
>shit art design >shit gameplay >shit graphics >decent storytelling I CAN'T WAIT TO BLOW $20 ON SUCH A FINE PIECE OF RPG
Xavier Gray
When they moved to a more story driven and character focused approach in Tyranny, instead of the usual party of murder hobos roaming the world collecting loot and treasures so prevalent in CRPGs, paired with the premise that evil had won, which instantly put off the moralfags that really make up the bulk of the RPG audience, they signaled about 80% of the usual CRPG fanbase that this game is not for them.
Considering that this game is much more linear and heavy on the branching story it should have been a AAA product and it would have been much more successful. At least i would have bought it since i'm really starved for a story driven AAA RPG that doesn't force me down the good guy route.
Henry Foster
I didn't get the game because I heard the ending was unfinished.
Gavin Sanchez
She's a beast creature that respects strength and tells you her hunting tales of raping your enemies. What more do you fucking want? In Dragon Age she would have been Sten AKA : "I dropped my sword on the ground and got mad and killed 3 ppl so now I'm sad even though there's nothing at all stopping me from getting my shitty sword back".
Grayson Phillips
>Tyranny has a LOT of character Oh yeah man, never seen anything like this before.
Charles Bailey
Tyranny and PoE are both shit, unfortunately.
Obsidian can't make good games anymore, get over it.
Adrian Cook
>SHES LOYAL BUT ONLY WHEN SHES NOT LOYAL
wow what a great character truly only Obsidishit could write it
Gabriel Diaz
>So many modern shitty WRPGs forget what made that game great.
The writing is what made Fallout great, and that's not something you can easily replicate. Being able to run from combat in Fallout was more a function of combat being a bungle of shit most of the time rather than roleplay.
Isaiah Scott
If you're a strong leader that kills her enemies (guys that she tells you all game she fucking despises), she's loyal. What are you even trying to say? Did you play the game at all?
Liam Hill
>The writing is what made Fallout great
That depended - Fallout 2 especially.
No, what made Fallout 1 and 2 great were the multiple solutions, being able to run away from fights or avoiding them entirely by abusing the games engine. It's very Deus Ex like for a 2D engine game.
Nolan Price
I enjoyed Tyranny. Too short for my liking but I have fun playing it.
Joshua Harris
This. I can't believe they tried to pull that marketing stunt to sell more copies by trying to tap into the whole sjw vs gamergate nonsense.
Easton Bennett
Only a minority of people want to avoid combat dude, what the hell are you talking about? Fallout was great because of the detailed world building and many ways you could solve quests and problems in said world.
Sebastian Harris
nv sold less and have worse rating than F3
Also nv is just a shittier modded 3
Blake Parker
Maybe you should make better games then.
Jason Wilson
is this how people really think now, just like, unironically it didn't sell very well so it sucks. if it's a niche title then it's a niche title it doesn't mean it sucks, i don't think you can really argue that the game is an artist failure.
..i guess i don't blame you for falling for the money line though with the way the 'video game journalists' focus on money these days.
Benjamin Young
>Only a minority of people want to avoid combat dude, what the hell are you talking about?
I'm talking about great games like Deus Ex and Fallout 1/2 which let you skip combat - unlike trash like Wasteland 2 or Dungeon Rats or Obsidishit games that force you into combat sequences.
Michael Wright
dark seer, chen and invoker. valve should sue.
Carter Wright
They should just do another sandbox RPG like New Vegas
David Adams
>sales number doesnt matter when its about a shitty developer i like
Sure buddy
Sebastian Cox
>a mediocre game of a niche genre sold badly Wow what a surprise
Aiden Myers
Bad marketing. This is the first time I've ever even heard of this game.
Hudson Lewis
Okay I guess. Didn't really know skipping combat is that important to some people. Everyone I know enjoys fighting things, but hey, it's not my place to tell you how to play your video games
Thomas Martin
I'm sure you're hip to all the latest releases breh
Tyler Nguyen
Early game Fallout 1 and 2, I avoid those random encounter battles as fast as I am able and run out of the exit grid.
Isaiah Roberts
It's literally worse than the games that came before it. The RTS genre also has the tendency to release increasingly bad games.
So people just stick with the good ones.
Jayden Carter
Sten was LAWFUL LAWFUL though, Kills-in-Shadows is another edgy character in a game about edgy characters.
Camden Gutierrez
>Insatiable bloodlust for violence and slaughter. >Insatiable lust for violence >an unapologetic killer >And she likes to play with her prey. >but not evil
Brayden Watson
You don't have to like her, just kill her.
Brody Robinson
>This form of gameplay isn't really working in today's environment Maybe we can finally get some games that aren't fucking topdown or isometric for a change
Jack Anderson
It'd be better written if she raped men with her futa penis tbqh
Juan Hernandez
Kind of this. I am going to start BGEE or PoE soon.
But the voice acting and modern gameplay of D:OS kind of has me spoiled/worried.
Dylan Richardson
Why do people do this. Make the same threads over and over again, baiting the same replies probably by the same people. Is it a fear of change? Or do they have a hard time getting (you)'s normally and they try to recreate their one success over and over again?
I don't see the entertainment value in this.
Nicholas Parker
Why the fuck all these RTwP try simulate turns in a fucking real time combat? The marketing was bad indeed, but not in that sense. They tried to sell a game were you are the evil guy, in the end you were the ambiguous good guy being locked out of any kind of actually evil stuff.
Easton Fisher
Modern numales wouldn't include a scene this graphic/obscene because it might offend their 1% female playerbase
Brandon Richardson
...
Noah Ross
>modern gameplay of D:OS >turn based combat >modern Wut?
Aiden Gray
She's literally an animal. Animals kill but are not malicious by nature. She walks on all four legs and every other word she says is interrupted by a beast like snarl, you know, like some kind of beast-woman. I don't understand your arguments, of course a territorial animal is going to rape whatever comes into its hunting grounds. She's intelligent enough to speak and will join your group simply because you're more powerful than her and she accepts you as a pack leader
Joshua Russell
This is really sad. I really liked it way more than PoE (although I still pirated it because it is clearly unfinished).
Noah Robinson
It's one of the few RPGs that let me play as an asshole and be rewarded for it.
Gabriel Ward
...
Kayden Bell
Seriously, if Tyranny had a moment like this, I would have played it.
Best part is that you can force her to have sex with you, but you don't even have to save her husband.
Blake Rivera
yeah the threads back when Tyranny came out were great because the majority of Sup Forums were shitting on it
Samuel Barnes
>game "flops" >expansion coming
?
Kevin Rodriguez
Someone has a fetish for badly written characters
Charles Flores
Tyranny was boring the new Numera was boring Pillars was alright because it was riding the initial wave of CRPG revival Divinity Original Sin showed me that Multiplayer was the way forward for CRPGS, and DivOS2 is taking it to the next level.
Ian Hill
>They tried to sell a game were you are the evil guy, in the end you were the ambiguous good guy being locked out of any kind of actually evil stuff.
As someone who loves the rare games where you play a game bad, there is nothing I hate more than this. I already hated how Star Wars Force Unleashed advertised how you got to be a Sith Warrior, yet like 2-3 missions into the game you joint he faggy rebels and become a good guy. But honestly I expected it with Tyranny. Modern RPG devs are so cucked they could never let anything morally bad get into their games. The most evil thing you could do is probably misgender someone or leave the toilet seat up after taking a piss.
Mason Gomez
the genre is dead again because POE sold. the game is shit with writing less interesting than dmc3.
now i am heavily wary of playing any current game trying to be a cash grab on my nostalgia
Jonathan Lewis
Paradox's economic model is selling poorly made, shitty, unfinished games that PCbros claim are good, but ONLY good if you buy the DLC/expansions
Kevin Powell
another tranny game flopping? what a surprise
Evan Peterson
What if I don't want her son to see me fuck her? Nice RPG asshole.
Caleb Cruz
this. they should be trying to make a good dragons age origins rip off instead.
Landon Reed
I remember this moment. God I loved Fallout 1 and 2. I really need to give these games a replay.
Mason Russell
>After you are done screaming my name
Asher Scott
>Divinity Original Sin showed me that Multiplayer was the way forward for CRPGS
Which is ironic, since the old Baldur's Gate games had it. Also Wasteland 3 is confirmed to have co-op.
Ryder Young
There's nothing really notably awful about her character. She's a bit bland because "hurr muh wild hunts" etc, but other than that it's a fairly straightforward character and I don't understand why shitpost about her of all characters when the game does have a lot of other glaring flaws.
