Emulating Y1 at the moment with these settings yet there's massive slowdown that wasn't happening when I played it last. Should I update to the latest build of pcsx2 to see if that fixes it or is there anything else I might have missed?

It is an interesting effect for sure, doesn't apply to the hair it seems since that's a different model.
Although it's not doing anything to solve the slowdown I've managed to minimise to halfway through fights.

akiyama has nothing. only legitimate strategy is stun-locking and it only works on half the fighters

you'll need to beat officer majima when he's roaming around town. you can walk in and out of buildings to respawn majima so keep doing that until officer majima turns up.

you'll have to play against and beat majima in that insect king minigame. the minigame itself can be found at the club sega thats near the bottom of the map. you might have to do a few of the substories based around the minigame in order for him to show up there.
>Dragon's Slow Burn 1
walk around near the side of the bowling place and some guy in a jacket will stop you to fight him. after you start the fight majima will suddenly appear and you'll have to beat him as well. if that guy in a leather jacket doesn't appear just enter and leave any building until he does.
>Dragon's Speed Reborn
you'll have to beat majima for the third time at pocket circuit to get this one. keep doing the tournaments there and he'll show up again.
