It was the unavoidable side effect of building a digital image on an analog display. Analog video formats looked fine on crt and by the time DVD came about things like interleaving were a thing which also helped improve digital image quality.

In fact CRT scanlines were gone by the time the SNES came out unless you played it on an old tv set.

No, scanlines are a distortion. At best they are something that can be worked around. They are not and never were a positive feature.

On a real CRT yeah scanlines are fine. On a LCD there has to be some real effort put in to make it look right. See the crt-royale shader for Retroarch or the CRT-sharp filter for Sonic Mania.

Yes i like scanline filters over a unfiltered image. Any filter + scanlines is cancer though.

It's part of the medium and was considered when the games were designed so I feel like something's missing when they aren't there.

There is something about CRT I just can't explain. I remember playing WoW for hours and it was responsive as Barry Allen and the colors were something else.

Scanlines is just a part of what makes retro games look great on CRTs. There are many other components such as glow and other technicalities.

If you just plat artificial scanlines on a picture it looks horrible.
