For ARPGs they are a bit below average in gameplay, but servicable. The aesthestic and story is their strong point

It's alright. I'd definitely give it a go if you want to try getting into SMT but just be aware that the gameplay isn't great compared to other SMT games.

Some of the major story beats at the end of Raidou 1 may be lost on you if you're not familiar with the first 2 mainline games but its nothing to stress your head over and SMT I and II are dated as hell so I wouldn't put it past you unless you get really invested in SMT. The same sort of goes for Raidou 2 since a major character in it just happens to be from mainline.

All great desu, haven't gotten to R1 yet.

It has Press Turn battles, fusable demons as your party and good difficulty. Other games in the series have done some of those, but none other has done all of theme.

I put it above a lot of other MegaTen games because it's very balanced in its qualities. I might prefer the concept of Raidou, the combat of IV:A, the gameplay flow of Persona or whatever, but Nocturne does a lot of things very well with few major issues, and while it may no be the best at many of those things, it's not bad at any of them either.

You can emulate it or get it with a US PSN account. Tough luck if you want it physical.

I felt the stories were largely separate. DDS1 did not need a sequel.

Nocturne has the best combat and most interesting setting but fucking hell it is a slog to get through like 50% of it due to the grind of constant random battles.

Raidou 2, P3, and P4 are all rank that high for me solely because I vastly prefer the stories in them to Nocturne and still found the battle systems to be good-to-passable - they may not have as many impressively designed boss battles/dungeons, and Hell I'm not even sure any of them but P3 can surpass moments like the TDE, but I still enjoyed my time with them a lot more.

Raidou 1 though, Christ, the story is still decent but the combat is just too dogshit for me to forgive.

The fact that it's the only 3D game with proper fusion, negotiation, and turn based battle system. The others all do different things but stray from the formula.
