Listened to Ace Combat soundtrack and its awesome. I never played a game from this series before.
Where do I start? What should I know?
If you still have your PS2 you can get the "holy trinity" (04, 5, Zero) for pretty cheap online. If not, 5 and Zero emulate near flawlessly, as do the PS1 titles and the 2 games for PSP.
Try to play 04, probably the best game in the series.
04 5 and 0 make up the ace combat holy trinity of vidya. Hopefully 7 makes it a quaternity.
Why is it called holy trinity? Are the other games shit or just not as good? Are there games I should definitely avoid? Whats with the PC game on steam?
I still have a old PS2 at my parents home.
Those three are just the best. Most people really dick ride 5, and for good reason, but 0 is my personal favorite.
6 is also pretty decent, weaker story. But better visuals. Only on x360 though.
Okay, so definitely 4, 5 and 0.
I don't own a 360.
What's with the PS3 and PC games?
How are the original games on PS1? I don't mind dated graphics. Just recently played FF7 and Digimon World.
>PS3 and PC games?
COMPLETELY IGNORE ASSAULT HORIZON (asswhore for short)
Infinity (multiplayer focus) should be dead by now
Oh and btw, never, and I mean NEVER, underestimate ACX (psp), but is better to play it emulated or on a Vita to have some better controls.
AC1 kinda falls flat graphicswise even compared (was a launch title) AC2 and 3 are worth a shot, get the fan tld version of 3 tho.
>COMPLETELY IGNORE ASSAULT HORIZON (asswhore for short)
not op but could u explain why
They're just that fookin' good senpai. Good goddamn vidya.
To keep it simple, the forced DFM (dogfight mode) turns the game into one big Call of Duty QTE, and it can't be disabled in any way. Additionally, the game is balanced for using it, so enemies are either evasive flying tanks, or weak aircraft that explode when you press a button or two.
Scamco thought it would be a good idea to chase the Cawadoody kiddies, for this this abomination of a game included
>simplified controls
>abandoning the stablished canon world in favor of MUH EVUL RUSSIAN COMMIES
>abandoned the technical focus of a generally good looking game in favor of ULTRA REALISTIC DESTROYED PLANES, to the point that a catchphrase during publicity was "Make Metal Bleed"
>Fucking helicopter gunner missions for some reason
and the worst offender
>Fucking qtes on regular flights (on top of the simplified controls) making the whole thing a joke.
Holy shit 6 is gorgeous. Man am I hyped for 7 now.
While all of this is true, it's still a fun game on its own, just a shit Ace Combat title.
6 is woefully underrated in the graphics department, it's the single best looking game on the 360, and it launched in 2007
The cream of the crop are the PS2 games. Ace Combat 04, Ace Combat 5, and Ace Combat Zero in that order are widely agreed as the best way to experience the series.
After that, I'd recommend Ace Combat 6 (xbox 360) for more of the same experience as the PS2 games storywise, or Ace Combat X (PSP) for more of the same gameplay. After that, if you want the most 90s game you will ever play, Ace Combat 2.
Ace Combat 3 is like... an RPG? Sorta. It's a spinoff game in a similar universe, but the future is all cyberpunk and dystopian and there's a branching storyline. However, all the characters suck. This one, you'll have to emulate and patch an English translation into. (Check /vg/'s /aceg/, emulation guides for all games and translation patches are always at the top of the thread)
It isn't.
When the flight mechanics of your game are on par with those on fucking battlefield you know that something is fucking wrong.
>Scamco
you know it's ALL bandai's fault. that company is a plague and the merge was the worst ever. I dare say worse than square+enix or activision+blizzard
>However, all the characters suck.
Delet
kys
dision did nothing wrong
>It's a spinoff game in a similar universe
Are you taking the piss?
Its a regular sequel on the same universe of the Big3 but set in 2045 or someshit like that.
IMO, 6 looks better than Infinity. Infinity should've used 6's engine, instead of ASS HORIZON's.
It is, but 6's engine was stuck on 360, that would have meant porting it to ps3 for Infinity.
How is Infinity? I completely forgot it existed.
Is it still up? Is it worth checking out right now?
They all use the same engine, it's just that AH's "artstyle" was fucked and Infinity just upped the contrast
Why did they even release 6 on the 360? AC has been a PlayStation franchise the rest of the time. Was it a deal with MS that didn't pan out?
The sound is also really fantastic. I can't believe it took me this long to play it.
Microsoft probably paid them for it. They went after a surprisingly large number of Japanese exclusives last generation.
For a brief period of time, Microsoft paid a shitload of Japanese developers money for timed exclusives.
The thing with timed exclusives is that most developers aren't going to suddenly port a game 1-2 years later to a different console for no reason. A PS3 version of 6 was """planned""" but obviously never came out.
Other games like Chromehounds went through the same thing.
Start with 2, and marvel at how every other game has taken from it.
It's the only game in the series that has been rereleased with upgraded visuals (on the ps2), has been remade (on 3ds) and essentially reimmaged (ace combat 4). Aces Project ain't shy at their love for it.
It's straight up action and rock&roll. You don't need radio chatter ego stroking, becuase you'll feel it by your actions and the pumping music.
>timed
This is the 1st time I've heard of this, everywhere else I've read about this, said the game (and some others) were Exclusive, period.
Yeah 6 was pretty god damn sexy for x360. If 7 is going to match that and exceed it with the weather effects then my dick is hard.
I am still baffled at how there wasn't a stage presentation for ac7 vr at e3, would have rocked the show for immersive potential.
>tfw keep crashing at the very end of the tunnel in the final AC5 mission
I'm busy as fuck so I get frustrated easily these daya, especially since I have to restart the whole mission each time.
Am I shit or what? Had no problems throughout all of AC4 so I'm not sure anymore.
Newsflash: Sony is fucking RETARDED
This is the company that thought that showing Dissidia NT wasnt worth it, but wasted time showing VR Fishing simulator with Noctis and fuckfriends.
>AC5
git gud?
Hell, its not even ACX's tunnel run featuring WOBBLY SCREEN WEEEEEE
Also, it's set in the real world, and the real world sucks.
And then there's this.
youtube.com
This is going to sound weird, but I, too, was interested in getting into Ace Combat.
I mostly play Simulators right now. The game I play the most is DCS with six different modules.
I know Ace Combat isn't DCS, but I'm tired of the grind. I want something new and exciting. Where should I start?
Literally the first post in the thread.
Ace Combat isn't a simulator, it's an arcade game that gets carried by its dialogue.
Are these games anything like Rogue Squadron?
I do not have a PS2 anymore. Do they emulate well?
will I be able to enjoy 7 without having played the older ones?
....
Literally the 1st post of the thread.
Again.
6 is the newest and the prettiest but is a 360 exclusive
5 and Zero seem to work fine.
4 has issues.
Also, regenerating health. Regenerating plane health.
We still don't know.
While they share the same world/setting (picrel) we don't know how heavy the throwbacks to wars/events on the previous games are gonna be.
You are just missing out by not playing them tho
Director has said they are expecting mostly new players since it's been so long, but if you want to get settled in beforehand then 5 would be the game to play, as 7 is taking place about ten years after 5.
So how does this work. You fly the only superplane flown by a god among hordes of faceless mooks?
4, 5, 0 and 6 are arguably the best to play today. The two PSP titles are pretty good and the PS1 titles are excellent but very dated now. The first two have hard rock "Top Gun" style soundtracks that are genuinely excellent if that interests you, 2 >>>> 1 though.
Avoid Ass Horizon like the plague. The 3DS title should be avoided if only because it reduces the dogfights into QTE's and rips all of the fun out of the gameplay. Infinity is free on the PS3 and pretty good but it's very multiplayer centric, the campaign is decent but extremely short and not worth what you pay to unlock it (or how much you have to grind)
>The thing with timed exclusives is that most developers aren't going to suddenly port a game 1-2 years later to a different console for no reason.
They had a *damn* good reason to port 6 to the PS3, because that's where most of the series' fans probably were.
Good luck hitting anything with guns, though.
Nobody seems to realize the potential in old series with die hard fans like Ace Combat or Front Mission. They do a shitty reboot that nobody likes, decide that means there is no interest, and when they finally get their act together they don't put any money into marketing it.
No you fly whatever plane you want. You are the super pilot.
Ace Combat Musou when?
They're fairly similar in gameplay, yes.
No, you generally unlock a super plane later after beating the final boss who flies it or collecting the parts in missions across the game or some shit.
No doubt you are way better than the AI in any plane you fly, but they often have things that are or should be more technically superior.
Oh also you sometimes go up against Metal Gear style super weapons like laser towers, rail guns, giant air carriers, mega sub's, and shit like that.
Do you think we will get MP-only superweapon raids ala infinity? shit was dope
If you have a 3DS. I recommend Ace Combat Assualt Horizon Legacy + (Ace Combat Cross Rumble) aka. Ace Combat 2 remake
>mega sub's
Mega subs that are also aircraft carriers.
This is what I did. Played through 4 last week, then did 5 in one day, and just started 0 last night.
I liked 5 way more so far.
After Zero I'll get around to making any of the shitty ps1 emulators play AC3JP correctly.
That would be sweet. My favorite are the giant air carriers like in 6 and 0. The railgun in 6 isn't as much fun since it was just a lower tier tunnel run.
I love the Ace duels in Zero. Those fights in the Round Table and after you can watch those lore videos of what happened to the Ace fighters post war.
Lore and Ace battles and that soundtrack with the flamenco! Gets me so erect.
Since I'm just starting, I was going to go Knight mode, but should I go full Merc to get the full Ace effect? I'm playing on Hard on my first play-through.
This, I recommend it to. It implements the AH combat mode but you're not forced in any way to use it. Like the user said, get the "+" version as it has some added content, like Amiibo support. I got it cheap off of Amazon. Or CFW your 3DS, very easy these days.
>Why is it called holy trinity?
This image.
I think the game is worth doing multiple runs, if you are just doing one to blow through though then do whatever feels right to you RPG style. If Knight suits you then go for it.
The only real gameplay difference is the amount of credits earned/access to more planes But >needing anything other than the eagle
Storywise you get to face different squads + different radio chatter
>ACX not above God tier (although still below Holy Trinity tier)
Fake and gay.
Go whatever route you want. 0 is something you replay several times. Be warned that Merc has some pretty tough fights.
I plan on doing 0 again to unlock all the aircraft. Just wanted to jump on 3JP immediately after, then I'm caught up on the series, minus AC6. I don't know anyone that has a 360 anymore, everyone's broke and they no longer want to replace them.
I was going to max out AC5 but with Zero looking to have more content, jumping right in.
I really hope AC7's Multiplayer is a better version of Infinity. I enjoyed playing with Sup Forums 2 years ago. Lots of waifu planes witnessed.
I think I might save Merc for Ace difficulty then. Go all in.
Eagle as in the F-15? Any particular variant? I'm an F-14 fag, so I tend to use that more, once I unlock it that is.
I'd argue that 0 is more worth your time for unlocks and replays. 5 is great for the story run though, but 0 rewards you more for multiple playthroughs.
Also it has ace battles out the ass, great soundtrack, fun super weapon fights, emotional final boss fight, deepest loee both because it is a prequel and all the rotoscoped ace interview segments, and of the trinity it has the most planes/variants IIRC.
Ohhh a top gun guy over here. I prefer Su in Ace games. You can work your way up to the 47 through that stupid sexy Su-37 terminator.
>Eagle as in the F-15?
Well the other eagle over there is the Golden Eagle and everyone calls that one Berkut so yeah.
Thing about the Eagle is that it is the canon plane for Cipher, nothing intrinsically bad about using whatever you please.
Speaking of...
I see you are a gentleman of elevated tastes and culture as well
>No slav canonplane since AC2
FUCK YOU SCAMCO
Yeah Top Gun was my childhood movie, used to watch it over and over as a kid. The F-14 was all over the place in the 80s, and the advanced
Used to play Afterburner cabs often, when we had a good Arcade. The F-14 hyper nostalgic.
Nothing deserves that end.
The advanced what?
THE ADVANCED WHAT, user?
I fucked that up. I meant the Advanced Cabinet of Afterburner. That shit was so cool. It was a good moment when I had the high score for the whole summer til they reset it. Quarters used to mean something.
>No slav canonplane since AC2
>G: Each Ace Combat has a “poster plane.” Which would you say is the aircraft that represents this game the most?
>KK: Maybe the F-22, it’s a good iconic plane to represent a numbered game of the series, even if I personally like the Flanker more.
;__;
In AC4, what maneuver did the Yellows do to turn on a dime? It looked as if they went vertical and flipped around. They did it every time you fired a missile at them.
Maybe one day they'll meet you halfway and use a slav plane that looks like an F-22.
The Cobra maneuver:
acecombat.wikia.com
I thinks it's called the cobra maneuver.
>I see you are a gentleman of elevated tastes and culture as well
It always amuses me how even amongst the cesspool that is Sup Forums there are fan groups that are so casually polite to each other. Other games like Souls don't have that same sense of camaraderie, I think something about being fans of an older series with a smaller fanbase just makes people more friendly.
...
Speaking about raptor lookalikes:
How come PA havent even showed the ATD-X yet? You'd think they'd be shilling the thing nonstop, muh NIPPON BANZAI and all that
Or I could have just said "good taste man" and have the same effect
a.k.a. It's a meme you dip
did pixie do anything wrong
LONG LIVE THE YUKTOBANIA
>DCS
>Ace Combat
>Ace Combat + Full Fidelity cockpits
Well, he was going to bomb the shit out of everything.
That's not a very justifiable gesture.
No
>Ace Combat + Full Fidelity cockpits
For "full fidelity" you mean "push buttons for 5 minutes" autism?
Otherwise for what we've seen AC7's cockpits are really fucking detailed
ace combat 4 was fucking amazing. I actually bought the game for my cousin who was visiting from california. 2 or 3 years later I went to California with my family to visit and I stayed at his house for 2 weeks. I got really sick so I stayed at his house while everyone went to California Disney and I literally found his AC4 game. That fucking faggot never played it so I started to play it and the story was freaking amazing. I loved the movie and the cut scenes. I loved how the kid told the story from the Erusean side and how the player was the ace pilot from ISAF. I loved the guitar music. That game literally made me an ace combat fan. I stole the game when I left to Florida. my cousin can suck my dick
>For "full fidelity" you mean "push buttons for 5 minutes" autism?
Yes.
I still want it.
...
Been visiting /h/ I see.
>
Always thought it was weird how they reverted to 1940s Germany.
I hope you lads are good and ready to splas some erusean fucking shits in 7
