Both are fine if a little power-creepy.

Z-moves are less cancerous than shit like Mega Sableye ever will be. In fact, they can make for interesting set ups

Pokemon needs as much offensive powercreep as possible since defensive stats scale a lot better

Neither were necessary. Any creative superiority Pokemon flaunted in comparison to its competition went out the fucking window with Mega evolutions. At that point they were basically an inferior Digimon.

Well for single player, Z-Moves fit my playstyle better where I care more about making battles look "good" for myself than any actual difficulty. Z-Moves are a much more exciting method of do-or-die turnabout after I've been jobbing than Mega Evolution.

I would much rather see more Mega Evolutions than unique Z-Moves, though.

When I was a kid back in gen 1 I used to self insert as the pc (like everyone) as a result for me evolution is tied to a feeling of progression and growth.
Even now as an adult when I do my playthrough of each new game I stack my team with as many evolutions as possible out of pure nostalgia.
For that reason I prefer mega evolutions but competitively they cause way more headaches then z-moves.
