Protips:

~Ignore the Smith machine for a standard barbell or DBs (this has few exceptions, like OHP [something where form is linear], but a BB or DB is still probably the decent option.

Lots of protein — getting 1-2g/lb. of bodyweight. Serotonin and dopamine are made from amino acids and respond very quickly to the amount of protein ingested, so this tip is a happiness tip as well.

Linear progression — adding weight (intensity) or reps (volume) is the best way of gaining muscle ("getting toned" requires size). Next to that, specific rep and set amounts benefit size over others (called hypertrophy).

CICO — Calories in vs. calories out is what defines body weight. Carbs and protein are 4 Calories/g -- fat is 9 Calories/g. Dietary cholesterol shows little to no impact on blood cholesterol "for the majority". The studies I have found stating an effect have control problems (specifically, stating a raise because of oxidation, while providing poor antioxidants).
