Do people use companions in Skyrim? I always go solo or use conjuration as a mage. They suck and get in the way.

Only because the level cap was decent, up to some point, but once you become a werewolf, the game becomes piss easy because you can throw people all over the place, or with the proper combination of weapons and skills you can do 4k damage in a second.

All the real followers like the huskarls have as much depth and characterization as any other NPC you could marry in that game.

Many legends about vampires require them to be virgins when they turn or they just become ghouls or die or something similar. i start using them around level 45 when i know i can sprint ahead of them because i can kill anything reliably by myself. they add some much needed charm when you're exploring a big lonely map.

lydia is nice although she's probably the most boring follower in the game, mostly because everyone will always end up getting her on every playthrough and if you don't go out of your way to get someone else she'll probably be your first too
i'm actually just started playing skyrim for the first time since release after having just finished morrowind and playing a bit of oblivion
i like it a lot more than the last time i played it because i feel like i can put everything into perspective and compare it directly to oblivion. oblivion has some good quests but you need a ton of mods to fix everything that's wrong, at least skyrim i can play vanilla and have fun

The first time I played, Lydia got hit by a giant and I never saw her again. I lost a lot of stuff and got pretty mad so I stopped bringing out companions and learned some summons/ raise dead instead.

No. They sound somewhat exhausted yet vaguely optimistic townsfolk. The way Lydia drags on "sworn to carry your burdens" sounds more smart assy. Like of course she'll do it, but she's not exactly excited about it and would rather not. Contrast that with how she says "Lead the way" which is more breathy and excited.
