he's really good
youtube.com
I'm partial to Nobuo Uematsu and Tsuyoshi Sekito myself.
Scars of Time is probably the greatest video game opening song of all time. The only one that comes close for me is Xenoblade's.
I really like Akira Yamaoka
Ryu Umemoto
i like kida a lot and also yamaoka but you have solid picks OP
Hirokazu Ando and Jun Ishikawa are pretty good damn good
Koichi Sugiyama
>Hirokazu Ando
my fucking african american, you're pretty good
keigo hoashi
I'm partial to Marty but he's an artist who went into the wrong industry.
Sadly, Mitsuda never topped those 2 games.
Any big name composer who can complete an OST without almost dying.
ZING
Except for Sakuraba, he's pretty bad in spite of his ability to not almost die writing music
I have high hopes for Xenoblade 2, Uraya's theme is fantastic and I'm pretty sure that's him
>I'm pretty sure that's him
inb4 it's like Xenoblade 1 ost where he contributes one song and the rest is ACE+ (who all did a damn fine job of it)
nah he's said on twitter each musician has an equal amount of songs, meaning he's done 1/4 or 1/5 of the OST
Classic JRPG music makes me sad
ACE+ did 29 out of 91 tracks, Sm4shfags like you need to be gassed.
>the rest is ACE
most of the OST was minami kiyota
Sup Forums is gonna shit on me but
keiichi okabe
>Has worked on 50+ OSTs
>Less than five are regularly brought up
not my fault plebs can't appreciate the soundtrack of mario party 1
Shikata Akiko
Hiroyuki Sawano
Keichii Okabe
Yoko Kanno
There are a lot of amazing composers out there, oddly most of them are from Japan.
Masafumi Takada
Maybe not better but Darren korb has done some good work with bastion and transistor (haven't played pyre so can't comment on that).
Also wanted to add some western composers to this thread.
This shit is my jam.
xenogears ost is really not that great. there's maybe 3 good songs on it. the rest is just leitmotifs
I can't. Okabe, Koshiro, and Gust Sound Team are close though.
Hoashi's work was much better on Automata than Okabe's.
Motoi Sakuraba > Mitsuda
Writes way catchier stuff, although Mitsuda has more range and depth, Sakuraba's the dude you want to jam out to.
I've never liked his music desu, it just doesn't sit well with me.
Masashi Hamauzu is good. You can tell SE is going to have him replace Nobuo.
youtube.com
I can only hope you're a desperate tales fag, liking sakuraba, let alone liking him more than Mitsuda, is downright embarrassing
No, actually I consider Valkyrie Profile his magnum opus, the stuff he did in Tales is okay to good at best, few outliers here and there, but VP1 is his best work.
Hamauzu's magnum opus would be SaGa Frontier 2 imo. Full of german-named songs like his ancestry, you can tell that he put his heart into them.
Nothing beats that.
I don't think Sakuraba is as good as Mitsuda but to say he hasn't done good stuff is equally false flagging. This song is GOAT.
youtube.com
congrats, you posted one of maybe a dozen songs out of hundreds he's done that are memorable
I haven't really listen to Automata OST, so I can't comment on that, but judging from MONACA's more recent anime OSTs, I can agree that some of Hoashi's tracks are better than Okabe's. I guess you can just replace "Okabe" with "MONACA" in my post.
>Motoi Sakuraba > Mitsuda

They are CATCHY.
I think Hamauzu's best stuff is from Final Fantasy X honestly, although SaGa Frontier 2 is really good but his stuff on X was just god like. His music really made the game for me.

Here's some lesser known tracks of his, but some of my favorites.
Some of his work can sound samey but overall his style of composition is probably the single most influential on my own. Sorely underrated imo.
Mitsuda is great too though.
Which games has Kanno composed for? I was under the impression that she only used to do Nobunaga's Ambition and Uncharted Water in the 90s and randomly the Ragnarok Online 2 soundtrack. Still one of my favorite composers.
the problem with his music is its great the first time, then you hear another OST and it's the fucking same shit. is one of the few exceptions
Mitsuda and Yoko Shimomura are both my jam.
I think Yoko has less range but obviously excels at piano and violin usage, whereas Mitsuda is more of a musical halloween, he can capture the essence of a locale extremely effectively.
What's Kikuta up to these days?
Shoji Meguro for sure.

Apparently working on the soundtrack for Indivisible, the upcoming not-Valkyrie Profile from the Skull Girls devs.
What's he done besides Secret of Mana? Only game I've played that's scored by him but the OST was really good.
Fucking finally someone mentions him.
I grew up with vagrant story's soundtrack. Phenomenal.
I can't think of any other video game composer that sounds like him.
Motoi Sakuraba has some good stuff.

Vagrant Story is definitely one of his greatest works, and probably the most dissimilar to the rest of his oeuvre as well. He said his greatest influence were the soundtracks of the Batman movies.

Some of my faves from the VS OST, fucking amazing game.
This, no one beats Meguro in how consistently good he is and how versatile his style is
The SMTIV OST utterly destroys anything he's ever done.

Find me a more unique and catchy tune than The Birds Chirp, I Sing.
Never listened to it so I can't judge
My point still stands however
I wouldn't go as far as calling them better because they are different music genres, but definitely "on the same level".
Yamane Michiru from Castlevania
Keiki Kobayashi from Ace Combat
That's interesting.
I'll have to listen to the musical scores for the old batman movies then.
They need to give him better games to make music for.
Legendia is best game though.
Has it been announced that he's doing the OST for Code Vein?
I don't think so, but he also has whatever the new GE is to deal with. His music is the best thing about those games, followed by wacky bullets.
I hope that he is. They said he was working on new music aside from GE. That said, I wish I could get into that series, but for some reason it's just not my thing. Obviously the OST is a treat though.
He also did a crazy OST for Mr. Driller.
youtube.com
I only like his GBA and 64 stuff.
Get the fuck out of here with that shit.
