The pseudo-canon explanation is that Gerald based his ultimate lifeform experiments on murals from Angel Island, since Sonic Battle makes it clear that Gerald explored Angel Island and researched it quite extensively, and there's already evidence like the artificial emerald Shrine and Artificial Chaos creatures. Biolizard is based on the murals of Perfect Chaos and Shadow is based on the Sonic mural (and the Sonic statues in Hydrocity).
