Silent Hill 1-4 are THE greatest survival horror classics out there, and top spooky.
If you haven't for some reason played these yet, here's the SH PC Guide and DL links for the PC versions:

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" is a all-in-one fix, that works as a no-cd crack as well. It is included in the pack.
If you use the NEW fix mentioned in the guide, you can use the sh2proxy's EXE as the no-cd crack!
In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.
If SH3 runs like shit even on a strong PC, check and lower the Rendering Resolution setting.
SH2-4 do not support Xinput gamepads. Either use Xpadder, a DirectInput pad, or just play with KB+M.
You can now see some decent emulator settings for SH1 as well in the guide. If the image of the game does NOT fill your entire screen in fullscreen mode, check your plugin AND GPU control panel's image scaling settings!
Also give the new PGXP emulator a shot for a lot less wobbly PS1 graphics.
will post tips in the reply

-Play in the release order.
-Never play below Normal difficulty.
-Replaying them all is recommended
-Turn down the ingame Brightness setting
-Don't try to kill everything that moves, especially outdoors
-Turning OFF the flashlight can really help
why turn down the brightness?
i just saved copypasta from other user, planning on playing them once i have enough time so i don't realy know
The Room shits on the rest of the series. Get fucked, retards. Shit taste morons.
Mary?
>kills the atmosphere
Fuck this. I tried to play Evil Within with the recommended brightness and was basically stumbling around trying to find where the fuck what is
Recenly replayed SH1 to brush up on my Japanese reading and I couldn't play it at night, just as I couldn't when I was a teenager. The atmosphere in that game is just brutal.
Also realized that the "since there's no dog around" line isn't present in the original game, it just says it's a doghouse. No clue where they got that from.
Found the casual.
Once you're done with the first 4 and hunger for more, Origins PS2 is an ok game plagued with bad port problems and Shattered Memories was the last actually good Silent Hill before things went to shit permanently. Fun fact both Origins and Shattered Memories were developed by the same team, so you can actually see their learning process when playing them both. And if Konami is ever going to outsource SH again, they're a decent candidate for making something actually decent.
Sorry but no, western developers have no business doing horror games. There are a few exceptions but SHO team isn't one of them.
There's only four Silent Hill games. Kill yourself.
Nah. They can do horror. They can't do Japanese shit, though. There's only four Silent Hill games.
Is that White Day game on PS4 any good?
>not wanting to punch the everliving shit out of spooks
I heard it's terribly unfair and needs to be patched
They're not even close to being as good as 1-4, but they're not shit either. Something that can't be said about the rest of western Silent Hill Abortions.
Origins had its moments where I started feeling the good old cold sweat again that I got playing the four games back when they were released, so I can't write it off as just pure shit, occasionally it grasps what Silent Hill is about. Shattered Memories on the other hand had enough new ideas of its own that it was a fun playthrough at least once.
Dude the thing about the room is like the models seem like they are on a different scale, like everything is like a tiny ripoff of 1-3. It never looked right to me.
Anyone remember that one game made by a single dev which heavily resembled Silent Hill 1? He released a demo which only had about 15 minutes worth of gameplay. At the end of it, he admitted it was too similar and decided to go back to the drawing board with something unique. Ring any bells? It was like 1 or 2 years ago.
Shut the fuck up.
No idea. Lone Survivor is kinda similar to Silent Hill though.
Just played it through the PC version of the remake. Its as "unfair" as the original White Day, meaning the enemies chasing you have stupid long sight for which they can spot you. But just like in the original game bathroom stalls are an escape that works 90% of the time, and once you unlock secondary routes, you can outrun them in circles whenever they catch you. Also never ever run or put lights on if you're not spotted, because theres a percentage chance Janitors just spawn right next to the room you're in and rush you.
The real bullshit was you should actually start playing the game on Hard difficulty, because Normal and lower difficulties have less secrets and overall content. Its a bummer to realize that after you've already completed the game on Normal and the weird and peculiar objects and things you find only trigger something in Hard difficulty.
Fuck off, Patrick
Not that user, but is it worth playing?
really depends on your TV/ monitor and settings
just adjust it to where black levels are dark enough, but maybe not too dark
I know what game you're talking about but if it's as you say maybe he just scrapped the whole thing.
I don't remember the name but the trailer is among the hundreds of my youtube liked videos.
Oh yes, if you can stomach difficult horror games with puzzles you can get stuck on. Remake lacks some of the good ideas of the original, like the infamous bucket in the middle of unlit school hallway ( Everytime you walk past that dark area too fast, your character kicks a bucket and the sudden loud noise makes you shit yourself ) but it also has some new ideas of its own.
Plenty of secret cool stuff to find, example when you try and backtrack at one part of the game, you get stuck in a Mario 64 stairwell:
No.
Found it. Banned Memories. It really is similar.
Yeah that one. Didn't get to play the demo though.
Anyway hope he really does change the concept because I don't really feel like playing a discount SH.
>can't find a dev blog
>last demo is from 2 years ago
>news about the guy still kinda fresh
What gives?
Exactly. Why do a great area once per game when you can do it *twice*? Now you're thinking!
This is the last thing he posted: youtube.com
Closest thing to a devblog is the Gamejolt page.
Guy could crowdfund the game if he's got enough of it to show.
Anyone here played Forgotten Memories: Alternate Realities?
How? I'm pretty sure the devs cancelled the port
Unless you mean on mobile, I don't play on that shit
makes games look less gray, and shadows actually dark.
modern LCDs tend to be waaay too bright for SHs. I tend to play 'em brightness at zero on my PC
>mobile
obviously if turning the light OFF results pure black screen, you may wanna consider setting it to 1.
Lowered brightness also helps to mask the night-time pop-in of environment when emulating; something you'd not see on the PS1
>Silent Hill 1-4 are THE greatest survival horror classics out there, and top spooky.
Truth
Seriously though, it's a clear downgrade when you aren't in first person in the room itself. I don't know why they did that.
*haunts your living room*
...
All the first person events are genius but I can't say that about the rest of the game.
*burps in your basement*
Silent Hill 1-3 are the masterpieces. 4 is a piece of shit. Everything after that never happened.
these animations are so fucking bad it's not even funny.
having default brightness is fine on a crt though. i personally tried 0 and even with the flashlight I can barely see
The ideas were interesting and I want to say good but this so many parts that make the whole thing frustrating.
I remember getting stuck at the beginning of the subway because you can't just use things like in the old games but equip them and use the "use" button instead of the "action" button. Or the suddenly changing camera angles during the final boss when the whole thing is timed.
yeah, CRTs have almost unrivaled black-levels and refresh speeds.
Also back tracking to the main building 1 to´combine keys is a pain in the ass and they're required to see some of the ghosts
What would you like to see in a "not silent hill" game? Would no voice acting be a deal breaker for you?
Nah. I just want a good story. Something unique.
Traditional survival horror gameplay, with dynamic camera-angles, tank controls, inventory management of some level, save-spots, and some minor freedom of exploration, would be nice.
>Would no voice acting be a deal breaker for you?
No. Voice acting is seriously overrated feature, and unless done very well, just ruins the atmosphere and game.
>and unless done very well, just ruins the atmosphere and game.
imo it added to the atmosphere in SH1
SH1's VA is far from the worst even the 90s had to offer.
It also worked in the context and mood of the game.
The two Silent Hill threads last night were good.
Yup.
In general, it's nice to see good ol' Silent Hill get almost daily threads these days. Not that it should be that surprising, as these games are pure, timeless art.
The enemy sound effects in SH4 were awful. What were the devs thinking?
Forced to cut corners and thus use some of the most generic sound library effects out there, just to get the game released by the time Konami wanted it out. Soon afterwards, TS was disbanded by their higher ups.
TEW actually does have really dark areas though.
