FFVIII's entire plot is one painfully ironic tragedy where Ultimecia's actions to avert her demise are the exact cause of her downfall. She's trapped in an endless time loop of wanting to escape fate only to enforce it.

The antagonists doing everything in their power to prevent a prophecy from coming true, or not doing anything thinking they can escape their destiny by not getting involved, ends up with them having a bad time.

There's a theory that after the events of FF8 people would know at some point in the future an evil sorceress will rise up. There'd end up being literal witch hunts to try and prevent it and eventually the persecution would make one of them come to hate everyone and want to get revenge, becoming the villain everyone treated her like.

Thematically: she is Squall's opposite in that they are both haunted by their pasts, believing their bad experiences will define them forever. Squall breaks out of this mindset and changes as a person, Ultimecia only withdrew further and went proper crazy.

What I want everyone who still tries to talk for the R=U theory to do is to go to above link, ctrl+f [UR1] and read the full analysis there. It is written by the exact same people who originally came up/popularized the theory in early 2000s so does it give the theory more than a fair shake but eventually comes to the conclusion that none of it holds up in the end.

Also here is a link to an interview where Kitase the director of FFVIII denies the theory:

Also here is a clear ingame proof from FFVIII itself that makes any attempt to grasp for straws for the R=U pointless: The 11 sorceresses we see during time compression which clearly suggests there are sorceresses between Rinoa and Ultimecia or should I say the the manifestations of their powers. Just the fact these exists clearly says that Rinoa HAS to die to pass her powers to them and since R=U requires you to believe that Rinoa is the last sorceress left in Squall's era and somehow living for "many generations" this clearly proves that bullshit false. Do remember that we see these sorceresses while we are travelling from present to future via time kompression.

Part of this is due to a shitty translation, but yeah, she spends most of the game in the background. Compare that to Exdeath, Kefka, Sephiroth or Kuja who are in the forefront. (though it's a bit more complicated than that in Sephiroth's case) It's similar to why no one gives a shit about Zemus.

Never realised this. FFVIII is a lot more interesting and nuanced than people give it credit for. I know FFVII suffered from some questionable translation causing ambiguity about what the fuck was actually going on, was it the same with VIII or was it just a load of good ideas put across not that well?
