It's the same explanation as thisThe hack writers were given characters and story with tons of potential that can go anywhere. Eredin, Avalach were pretty interesting in the books ,unlike the game where they were generic and useless.

Just like they didn't know what to do with Novigrad, they had no idea what to do with Eredin and Avalach, so they butchered the books and the previous games to make the story as generic as possible , while relying exclusively on characters form the books and previous games

When Geralt faces them in the swamp you get the impression that they choose to even have a corporeal form, and they can disappear and plant a terrible curse on you if you say the wrong word to them.
Then in the end, the fight you at melee and you just kill them. What the fuck was that shit.

Meanwhile you can kill ghosts in the Witcher world with a sword
