Dark souls is only reasonably challenging at best. People like to put it on a pedestal because it's a recent AAA title that actually requires you to react instead of spamming or holding a button.

Prey had pretty much the difficulty curve of DS turned to 11. Game is retardedly hard until you understand how to abuse some mechanics so hard you will rek pretty much anything in the game.
And I don't play a lot of modern shit so I'm not sure, but I do remember even COD MW2 on hard being 10 times harder than DS. If you want older examples I have a lot.
The games are not actually bad, but the "Dark Souls is the hardest game ever" needs to die. The game is hard mostly because you are a noob with no knowledge of the game, and the game also has some cheesy instakills if you don't know about them beforehand. While the difficulty curve is not as retarded as prey above, it still is much easier when you got the basics down.

PS:Dark Souls actually has an easy mode, it's called summoning another player.
