It is the worst of the Genesis games. No other zone makes me want to put down the controller than Marble Garden.

Marble Garden is only bad in comparison to the other S3K zones. It's honestly better than almost all of what Sonic 1 has to offer.

This honestly makes it worse than it actually is.
You just get off Green Hill, which honestly is a damn good starting level. You're feeling good.
Then you immediately hit this fucking wall of "boring" known as Marble.

It just kills the mood right away.

Swap Mania and CD and we're golden

Marble Garden is straight up inferior to Green Hill, Spring Yard, and Starlight Zone which are all excellent levels and often are the levels that inspired levels in future games like Emerald Hill/Angel Island and Casino Night/Carnival Night. Labyrinth Zone isn't a gimmick zone, it utilizes a major mechanic which is water which appears across the rest of the games, often with more than one zone featuring the water mechanics. Scrap Brain Zone is the industrial zone. Metropolis, Oil Ocean, Chemical Plant, Launch Base, Death Egg, and so on are off shoots of that. Great zone with many obstacles especially varying on the routes you take with each zone being very thematically different from an outside, to an inside, to a underground waterway.

Marble Garden is nowhere near better than any of those zones. Then you have the zone aspects of Marble Garden like the tops, the need to spindash on wheels to bring up platforms, large spiked balls often right in your path, then stalling to hit the weak point of a face that shoots arrows. Just due to all of that it puts it lower than Marble Zone which focuses much more on platforming on the bottom sections and speed on the surface area.

That zone is great, avoiding death trap to death trap. Vanishing platforms, spinning platforms on a tread, flame throwers, tesla coils, buzz saws, pistons, swinging spiked balls, dropping floors, it went all out. You were getting to the heart of it all.
