I don’t think you get the meaning of rehash.

You'll have the most fun if you try to complete battles in as few moves as possible. Paper Mario leaves very little up to RNG, so it's just a matter of matching up the right attacks to the right groups of enemies.
Also, the combat gets much more developed once you get the Quick Change badge, which is I think around chapter 3 or 4.

I know Paper Mario started out as a loose sequel early in development but they're barely even similar aside from both being RPGs. Mario & Luigi borrows a lot more heavily from it.

But the environments, story and battle style of Paper Mario and SMRPG are completely different. The only similarity they have is that you get exp and Mario has a hammer. How the fuck are you seeing it as a rehash?

It's actually supposed to the be the sequel but because of some company shit, I think Rareware or whatever, they had to change it up. But Paper Mario was supposed to be the sequel to it.

it's like .1.6 or something, most of the enemies are changed, but chapters 5 through 8 are getting changes to the map in the future.

Sup Forums's tried at least 6 times to make a Paper Mario fangame and failed every time
it's sad because I remember some of the theoretical partners having really neat designs

I mean, we finally got a proper sequel to Sunshine/SM64, so Nintendo might be branching out and willing to let their franchises have more creative freedom than before

Although considering the statement about M&L being the only dedicated RPG series now it's probably not likely

There was this one that an user posted webms now and then in dev threads/agdg but he has vanished recently. Another PM-like project with gameplay that is still going is paper bugs, but it doesn't use mario characters

Lastly there is this also non mario PM styled game, the user for this still posts now and then on dev threads but didn't show any gameplay yet besides a few battle animations

Super Mario RPG is in a league of its own. Last true square/Nintendo collaboration.

The game just wouldn't have the same feel today. 3D Mario looks the same in like every game.

at best it takes some inspiration from SMRPG but core gameplay is shifted far too much to call it a rehash
