Is there a dev better than Squaresoft in its prime?
Is there a dev better than Squaresoft in its prime?
Enix in its prime.
Capcom
...
>tfw you will never get a new Final Fantasy with new characters, plot, and battle mechanics every year like the late 90s again
Blizzard before they became cucks
Capcom and/or Konami at their prime?
Konami in its prime.
probably Rare in its prime.
No
I don't think any of these guys put out nearly as many good games in the same amount of time as Square did in the 90s.
Westwood
>Gradius
>Contra
>Sparkster
>Mystical Ninja
>Metal Gear
>Beatmania series
>Suikoden
>Silent Hill
>Castlevania
>Silent Scope
No, Square didn't have a chance.
You can say that about any developer of that caliber during their peak
Blizzard in their prime were unstoppable, every game they made dominated it's genre so much it killed it's genre
Capcom, Konami and Squaresoft pretty much ran gaming in the 90s. Outside of Nintendo, Sega and Sony those three companies were the absolute kings in gaming. They put out all the great memorable stuff that largely still is huge and exists in some form today.
>Have to wait like half an entire console generation for a final fantasy game
>It's shit
>It gets sequels
>Theyre still shit
>Years into the generation after
>New Final Fantasy game
>It's less shit
>but still kinda shit
This is the wrong timeline.
Rare, Konami, and Squaresoft were the kings of the late 90's. There is absolutely no disputing this.
Why doesn't Namco get a mention? They practically served as second party to Sony with absolutely top quality stuff, plus their Playstation based arcade board.
>this thread sinks like a rock because it's true and there's nothing to argue

Westwood
I mean sure they were important to. I think Tekken and Soul Blade, then Soul Calibur pretty much is what defined them during those later 90s and into the 2K years though. So outside of fighting games? I mean feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I'd put the other 3 japanese companies above it that I previously mentioned as far as influence goes.
One thing is definitely for sure. The Japs dominated gaming. West had their stuff to sure but it was very much Japanese domination in that time.
Nintendo EAD
Capcom, Blizzard, and Konami
Id, Capcom, Konami, Looking Glass, Westwood, etc.
Squaresoft made some shallow cinematic linear RPGs, sine really buggy and poorly balanced fighters, really terrible shooters, a cancerous racer, etc.
Like the only thing they did right is attracting a bunch of weebs and casuals to their "RPG"s. They never made any exceptional games.
