fps drops probably occur because they actually use AA, MK8 noticeably does not have AA but was able to maintain 60 fps because of it

It's a handheld. It has to be judged by different standards than a home console. Comparing rabbids to other handheld games it actually does look incredible. Also keep in mind that games you play on a handheld will inherently look clearer than games you play on a console because it's a much smaller screen. 720p on a small screen is way better than 1080p on a large TV.

To highlight more what I'm saying here - when I play a game on 720p on my laptop it looks great, but when I play a game on 720p on my big screen TV it looks like garbage. Screen size is very important when you're talking about resolution.

And why is that noteworthy, for any reason? They have their graphics and overlays that are animated at 60fps and they splice in video clips of other games which run at higher framerates.

There are animations as well. They also know what hardware they're using ahead of time, there is no reason for this kind of performance.

I disagree that its a standout game of 2017. We've had a lot of good games this year. Persona 5, botw, nier, splatoon 2, and many more. I wouldn't say this game stands out among them. It does look a lot better than expected though. Ubisoft never fails to end up disappointing me though and looks like op is the start of it.

Illumination is a US company.
It only had one french director working in the movies but also other US directors along side him.

That's better than other games. Games ported using the default UE settings (snake pass) run 66% RenderingScale at 720p, or 844x475. Similarly, Sonic Colours runs at 480p.
