Mobile games were often associated with very young kids. That demographic has now been completely swallowed by mobile game cancer.

The Vita and 3DS survive almost exclusively by means of niche Japanese games. Of course, there aren't as many as these, giving the impression that handhelds are failing, but that's not true. Even the Vita, widely considered to be a flop, many years after Sony dropped 1st party support for it, continues to receive games regularly.

I think it'll be difficult for a new generation of handhelds to succeed, though.

As for the vita I blame the memory card bullshit, I'm enough of a weeb to enjoy at least some of the games, but having to pay that much for some memory cards is fucking retarded

A cellphone does everything a mobile game device, on top of being useful for more than just gaming. The only advantage a handheld has is having buttons but then you could just use some accessory of your choice that docks into a phone.

It doesn't help that literally every game that comes out on the Vita gets ported to the PC eventually.
