while competitive games have dipped in quality since the late 90s, there are still a lot of good fighting games from recent years (blazblue, GGxrd, uniest all come to mind). it's the single player games that have really gone to shit

Prey is legitimately a masterpiece. Ignore all the bullshit about the IP, it's not a reboot, it's just the dumb suits at Bethesda trying to exploit a dead brand. Ironically it probably made the game sell much worse than it otherwise would have. And I bet your fucking ass none of those suits were fired for their incompetence. Anyways, it's a great game, amazing level design, cool setting, lots of clever ideas, amazing UI, decent quality of life, etc. A few technical issues but otherwise spotless.

i love fighting games too but i have never dedicated the proper time to getting good at them, so i just dick around online and fap to the hot characters. i still recognize that the games require a lot of skill and mechanical execution to be good at though, so i respect them as games.

Overwatch is yet another example of a mediocre team based arena shooter which hasn't changed its formula for about a decade now. It's a stagnant subgenre within a larger genre that's even more stagnant.
