I still have my R4 Gold in my DS, it plays almost flawlessly all games except for Pokemon HGSS and BW which drops frames and Contra IV and Portrait of Ruin crash after a few minutes.

Me too, I used to have dozens of games on it all the time during 2008-2011 on 2 different cards, one for my DSL and one for my DSi.
I played the shit out of Deadly Silence, Phoenix Wright and Mega Man ZX on it.

I watched an entire movie on it (Transformers) once to test it and it worked flawlessly, it was great.
The screen had a shitty resolution but I unironically enjoyed that the battery was still 2 bars despite being 2 hours on and playing.

After years of GBA/GBC with just one game a year from my uncle if I was lucky, getting a flashcart for the DS was like a dream come true. I probably still have more playtime on my DS than any other console I have right now. I don't really pirate much anymore these days but is there a DS flashcart usable with 3DS which doesn't require firmware downgrading?

My first R4 ended up permanently freezing in the initial black Loading screen so I had to buy a second one. I still feel the dread whenever the 2nd R4 sometimes freezes like that.

My brothers bought it back in 2007 for £40 each, so £120 overall. When they came home and set it up we didn't get Pokémon Diamond/Pearl since we wanted to wait for Christmas but after a day we just said "fuck that" and downloaded it.

I'm happy I had one, since it let me play tons of DS games for free that I would've never had the chance to. The Ace Attorney games, Ghost Trick, Scribblenauts, All DS Pokémon's (before they'd come out in the west as well since the Japanese rom's always worked), Solatorobo, Advance Wars, Rhythm Heaven, Daigasso Band Brothers, TWEWY, Chrono Trigger etc.

The only drawback is now I want to own these games and they're hard to come by/expensive.

Get different firmware. I have the same setup. Took me hours to find firmware that would bridge the gap between a 3DS cart and a DSLite machine, since I bought both new from the box this year.

Also, I'd guess the 3DS has been patched to block R4s. I have no idea, though. Look it up yourself. It's not like the sites where that information is available were hidden away.
