nostalgia

Can't play any of the modern Pokemon games because of how soulless the art looks.

/thread

pokemon looks like autistic trash, it's one of the few games that looks more autistic than minecraft

fpbp

>Comfy
Disregarding your meme word, especially on the gameboy color these games had to make the most out of their limited capabilities. So they had to focus entirely on style.

I feel nostalgia for the last 10 times this thread happened this week.

>that building and cave on the bottom left
I wonder what they were going to be.

Fairly sure that is the alpha ruinds and the research building

Yup.

you were just looking for an excuse to post GSC weren't you?
that's fine

anyone prefer this theme to the original? Original Lavender town was ruined by creepypasta shit and was never really that good to begin with.

It's hard to describe. Something about the orthographic view.

These games did have a comfy aesthetic though. 1st gen was too rough and no colors, 3rd gen was polished and overdone with roms. 3d pokemon doesnt really work that well. Too bad more modern games in general dont use this aesthetic if its a 2d rpg. Looks like earthbound aeshtetic but gritty style. Also that matching warm OST really hits you better then later soundtracks in pokemon.

I don't think so, not entirely anyways. I'd much rather play a classic Fire Emblem game with the absurd but detailed sprite animations rather than what the latest in the series have to offer. Some of that may be nostalgia, but I'd also argue that simple sprites can look clean and detailed while going for "better" graphics sometimes just gives you clipping and pointy polygons.

Low sprite count and lack of graphical ability meant that they had to work harder to compensate with style.

...

I love that these threads started popping up a few weeks before the eshop re-releases. Gets me more excited for the release.
Silver was my first pokemon game. Still gonna pirate though. Feel like I have to include that in there or I'm gonna get called a shill.

Because older *games* are comfy. Older games are comfy because they're better than newer games, and because gaming still had its innocence back then before normies, SJWs, and corporate fuckheads came in and fucked it all up.

couldn't have said it better myself

>GBA Swordmaster critical
>guy moves so fast the he's striking from everywhere and comes down from the sky when done striking
>3DS swordmaster critical
>does a normal strike with a voice line cut-in

Would be nice if we could combine both

Simple designs

Just to expand on this: Pixel graphics also have the advantage of a limited display. A map like OPs pic would be total shit if it used the entirety of a 1080p screen. Playing it on a 4:3 TV or smaller gave these maps a bigger, mysterious feel. Basically, less is more.

It's dated for sure, but I think it suits the genre. I wish developers would focus on content more than graphics and just make good sprite shit sometimes.

>a 4:3 TV or smaller
Nigga it's a GBC game.

You're not wrong though. This pic is 1:1 how the game looks on a GBC. The resolution is so tiny you can barely see any of it. This absolutely contributes to what OP is describing - when you can only see a small bit of the map at a time, it makes everything feel much bigger.

Restraint. A game that tries as hard as it can to dazzle you is not comfy, and every new Pokemon region feels more like a tourist trap.
