thank god this didn't go through. after Bionic Commando and DmC, with the exception of the RE franchise, it can't hurt for Capcom to go back to it's roots of goofy, off the wall concepts and designs. works amazingly well before the company's downfall and reliance on RE & SF.

These aren't concept art, they're just character reference sheets. The designs are finalized, these would be used to keep artwork on model as opposed to exploring new ideas for a character.

FF8 had fantastic art direction, even if it's hard to see through the pixels sometimes.

Darkstalkers' design process involved the main artist/designer of the time (Akiman) taking all the other artists who had primarily just done sprite animation with little to no experience in designing their own characters and just having them churn out design after design for 3 whole months, giving them some guidance along the way. So it's no surprise that a lot of the stuff they drew during those 3 months looks nothing like what they ended up using in the game.

if you ever looked through the image galleries of the KoF games in the early 90's, this isn't so farfetched. as pointed out, they shit out a lot of random designs at time, take the tiny bits that worked, stick and improve on that. at times these can look like some early 90's amateur comic book drawings done by some bored kid on his notebook, or a quick sketch by fashion designer who's simply bad at drawing.

honestly, it was fun comparing the weird ass art to the overall better final product.
