Is Dead Space a horror game?

Is Dead Space a horror game?

It's an action game, but it is very atmospheric and has some horror elements to it, especially on hard.

horror-action hybrid.

It has too many jumpscares to not be a horror game.

Sure

barely.

My friend says it's not horror because you can fight and kill the monsters. How do I refute this?

It's not a survival horror game, like Silent Hill or the first 3 Resident Evil, but it's a horror-themed action game. So yes.

Tell him to learn something about game design and video game history, and stop thinking he knows shit because he's watching markiplier jumpscare videos.

you flip the box over and point to where it says horror on the back and then tell him to stop being an autistic sperg.
it's a horror game, it's just not a very good horror game. it's a solid action game with a horror theme.

>Is Dead Space a horror game?

Yes.
But Sup Forums will claim that if it doesn't control like ass and you're massively gimped it's not horror. Because that's clearly what it says in the horror handbook.

no, but it doesn't help it. they give you way too much ammo, and there's really nothing in the game but shooting, so there's nothing to break up the pacing and build that tension up again.
the atmosphere could have also been a lot better. that's why it's not that great as a horror game.

All gaymes are horror where you chop off bodyparts or the wounds are very detailed are considered horror.

by soccermoms maybe.

Y'know what's the difference between horror movies and thrillers, right?

It's the same thing with games.

Fight and kill him

>too much ammo
Not in my experience. What difficulty is it set on?

make love to his mom, that would teach him

I don't think you can. The only part that I think can be considered horror is the beginning where you're running, you don't have much to rely on, and you're scared to not die. Once you start getting guns and find out what kills them, it becomes routine and not really scary anymore. But this is just related to gameplay, there's plenty of other setpieces in the game that can cause horror, such as the bosses, the actual lore of the necromorph and how they mutate people, and the horrific realization of what the people did to other people on the ship based on a manufactured religion.

Tell him that removing the guns and killing just turns it into a walking simulator instead of a "real game" :^)

no, it's not.

whatever the hardest one is you can choose on a first playthrough.

It really only has one jumpscare. The monsters always pop out of the exact same air vents. A jumpscare that's effective precisely once.

Yes, but it's an action game with a horror aesthetic, not a survival game with a horror aesthetic.

The first one is. The rest aren't.

the game LITERALLY showers you with ammo.
about to run out of ammo? the next monster you kill will conveniently drop ammo.
unless you purposefully avoid picking up anything, it is *literally* impossible to run out. you'll always have between 1 bullet and a full clip/magazine/recharge of whatever gun you have.

Even on Impossible the ammo drops are quite generous. I never once ran into an ammo issue during my Impossible playthroughs.

After the first hour or so you have already seen every jumpscare and you know when will they be, then it becomes a mindless action shooter, a fun one, mind you.

kind of

You tell your friend to stop being retarded.

Dead space = Horror/action
Dead space 2 = Action/Horror
Dead space 3 = Action

It's a horror game, it just stops being scary after the first few hours

you can't because he is right
horror literally requires the protagonist/s to be unable to effectively defend from the threat until the climax, Isaac can roflstomp anything 30 minutes into the game

>horror literally requires the protagonist/s to be unable to effectively defend from the threat until the climax,
amnesia and outlast fags need to be exterminated.

It's more of a horror game than every Resident Evil from 4 through 6.

No, it's a horror game. Dead Space 2 is the action game.

Yes

Completely wrong. That's not what horror is about, that's an incredibly narrow-minded college kid veiw of horror. What makes Dead Space horror is its emphasis on dread, ever-present threat, atmosphere, sound design, traumatic violence and, of course, authorial intent. The game is designed about giving you small increases of agency contrasted with new, unknown environments and encounters meant to test that agency.

What your idiot friend should understand and be asking 'is Dead Space a GOOD EXAMPLE of horror?'. I personally think it is, as focused on combat as it is, the existence of combat doesn't make something not horror. That would mean Silent Hill isn't horror, which is just straight up retarded.

More like HORRIBLE game.

being hopeless in face of danger is definition of horror you massive fucking faggot

>horror=walking sim
what did he mean by this?

I guess Silent Hill isn't horror then, since you can kill monsters

Not sure any game where you're armed to the teeth can be classed as horror senpai, but it is a good game.

It can, if the overall intention of the game is to unsettle or scare you. However, the question to be asked is if it's a good example of horror or not, depending how successful it is making you feel uncomfortable, which a game brimming with weaponry might not do too well. I will say Dead Space and its sequel did spook me good a few times.

no you're the massive fucking faggot. it's much more scary when you can fight back, but are still at a large disadvantage. go neck yourself.

This

Two words: Resident Evil. Two more words: Silent Hill. Your friend is a fucking moron.

>the game LITERALLY showers you with ammo.
I don't remember any shower scenes, let alone ones in which Isaac takes a shower in ammo.

This.

It's RE4 in space.

>How do I refute this?
Make him play Silent Hills 1-4, Afraid Of Monsters: DC, and Resident Evil: REmake (and 2-3)

Ironically it's more action-y but the game itself is IMO way better horror than the first.

Low Tier: horror games that give you a rocket launcher and ten thousand ammo
Mid Tier: horror games that give you nothing
Top Tier: horror games that give you weapons but they're unwieldy and ineffectual

Go for the throat

U dont bitch
Dead Space and RE4 are action horror because you have so many capabilities in combat
